The classes will cover the following topics:
Folklore and popular mythology in the process of shaping Russian cultural identity
Russian culture in the era of globalization: migrations, inspirations, intercultural dialogues
The reception of Russian culture in Poland as a site of interpretative conflict
Architectural debates: sacred, profane, and power in public spaces
Urban spaces and daily life: culture, authority, and social mobility in Russia
Memory sites in Russia: landscape as a medium of history and identity
Russian popular culture: ideology embedded in entertainment
Screen history: the impact of political and social changes on the development of Russian cinema
Language as a tool of power: language policy and cultural tensions in Russia
Faith, rituals, and society in Russia: anthropological perspective on religious transformations in historical context
Social and political rituals in Russian culture
National minorities in Russia: culture, discourses of power, and negotiations of identity
Protests and resistance narratives: social movements in Russia in the 20th and 21st centuries from a cultural studies perspective
Culture of symbols in Russia: the influence of meanings on social practices and values
Readers, authors, and functions of literature: challenges of contemporary literary culture in Russia
The classes will be conducted as discussions on assigned texts or materials presented by the instructor or students, serving as sources for reflection on the specifics of cultural phenomena in the fields of literature, art (visual arts, architecture, music, film), and media in Russia from the 20th century to the early 21st century

Learning outcomes
Knowledge: the graduate knows and understands:
- advanced terminology in cultural studies, taking into account the research perspective of Russia (schools, texts, and scholars within cultural studies), as well as the specific development of these disciplines in the countries of the region; possesses advanced knowledge of related disciplinary terminology necessary for exploring and understanding cultural phenomena in the region (K2_W02)
- the specificity of various cultural models in an anthropological perspective (traditional, noble, bourgeois, mass), their processes of transformation and mutual interrelations, as well as their manifestations in the symbolic and semiotic sphere, that is, within the culture and art, literature and language, and history of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, at an advanced level (K2_W03)
- the broadly understood intercultural context at an advanced level; has in-depth knowledge of the human being as a subject constructing social structures and cultural products, and is aware of the principles governing their functioning, as well as the resulting differences in the perception of social life among representatives of different nationalities, ideological and religious groups, and variously defined minorities (K2_W07).
Skills: the graduate is able to:
- search for, select, analyse and use necessary information from various sources (K2_U01)
- formulate and analyse research problems, select appropriate research methods and tools, and conduct research independently and under the supervision of an academic advisor in the field of cultural studies and related disciplines, concerning the region of Russia, even under unpredictable conditions (K2_U02)
- carry out an advanced critical analysis of cultural artefacts characteristic of a given period in the development of Russia; identify different types of cultural artefacts from the region, perform their in-depth critical analysis, and distinguish various perspectives on cultural development while remaining aware of cultural identity differences and contextual factors (K2_U05).
Social competences: the graduate is prepared to:
- critically assess their own knowledge, engage in continuous learning, and supplement the knowledge and skills they have acquired (K2_K01)
- participate actively in cultural life, organise cultural initiatives, and make use of its diverse forms (K2_K05).
Assessment criteria
Classes have the character of a seminar. In addition to the current preparation for classes (reading reading and studies), a presentation on the topic given by the teacher is also provided. The date of presentation is the date set by the teacher during the first or second classes. Persons absent from these classes are required to obtain information from the teacher.
The subject ends with an oral pass with a grade.
The condition for admission to pass the subject is compulsory attendance according to the WLS Study Regulations.
A student has the right to be absent 2 times in one semester, consisting of 30 class hours (thirty 2-hour classes). At the beginning of the course the teacher will instruct students on how to make up for the absence and complete what they have missed. The student's time table overlaps do not excuse over limit absences.
The pass will include verification of knowledge from the material discussed during the semester.
The final grade of the course consists of:
- activity during classes (30%)
- work - PowerPoint presentation and paper version of the text (30%)
- oral exam - 4 questions (40%).
