The key to the culture of the region: conflicts - relations (I) - Baltic countries 3224-D7KLUCZKRB
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the basic issues in
the history of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia from the Middle Ages to the
Soviet era, showing the mutual relations between these nations, political
relations with other states and the construction of their own identity.
The following issues will be discussed:
1. Relations between Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland to the 14th
century.
2. Relations between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Rus to the 14th
century.
3. The conquest of the Latvian lands by the Germans in the 13th century.
4. The Teutonic-Lithuanian conflict over Samogitia from the 2nd half of
the 14th century to the early 15th century.
5. Lithuanian-Polish relations after the union of Kreva.
6. The wars over Livonia in the 16th century.
7.The beginning of the national revival in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia:
similarities and differences.
8.The national revival of Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians through the
prism of other national minorities living in these lands.
9. Polish-Lithuanian relations in the interwar period.
10.Lithuanian-Latvian-Estonian relations in the interwar period.
11.The Soviet Union and Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia between 1922 and
1941.
12. German policy in the Ostland area.
13. Stalinism in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia after 1944.
14. Post-war forms of protest in the Baltic republics.
15. The second national revival in the Baltic republics.

emphasis on cultural processes and phenomena in the context of social

2) knows and understands to a greater extent issues related to the
development of national, religious, socio-political and economic relations

Assessment criteria
The condition for admission to pass the course is obligatory attendance in
accordance with the Detailed Rules of Study at the Faculty of Applied
Linguistics (Resolution No. 114 of the LS Faculty Council of
19/12/2017).
Classes will be conducted in the form of a discussion on the assigned
readings or material presented by the teacher in the form of a
presentation. Active participation in the discussion means participation in
the discussion during at least 50% of the classes.
There will also be a written work (3-6 pp.) or a presentation on a topic
assigned by the teacher. The deadline for submitting a written work is the
date set by the teacher during the first or second class. People absent from
these classes are required to obtain information from the teacher who
teaches them.
The oral exam will cover knowledge of the material discussed in class
during the semester and will include two randomly selected questions
from the material discussed in class.
The final mark comprises the following elements:
Active and substantive participation in classes (20%).
Written work or presentation on a topic designated by the teacher (20%).
Oral exam (60%) (complete answer to the question = 30%, partial = 15%)
