Culture of the countries of the region in a European context - Belarus, Lithuania, Poland 3224-D5EURBLP-OG
The classes are a culmination of the themes devoted to the history and
present-day culture of Belarus, Lithuania and Poland, showing its broader
perspective. Their aim is to indicate and analyse the relations between
Polish, Lithuanian and Belarusian culture and the other cultures of the
East-Central European countries as well as to situate the selected culture
on the map of cultural phenomena and processes shaping the face of
European culture today. The material analysed in the course includes
phenomena and processes related to cultural identity and diversity, forms
of social bonds and activities, as well as ideological currents and various
practices of institutionalisation, contestation and emancipation related to
them.
The following issues will be discussed in the class:
1. The Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the Belarusian perspective.
2. Poles and the Lithuanian national movement (late 19th and early 20th
centuries).
3. The cultural life of Vilnius in the interwar period - selected issues.
4. The north-eastern provinces of the Second Polish Republic in the lens
of Jan Bułhak.
5. Krajowcy - proponents of compromise or followers of utopia?
6. Belarusian national movement in Vilnius before World War I.
7. The fate of the Belarusian intelligentsia in the interwar period in the
BSSR.
8. The experience of World War II (based on selected memoirs).
9. Longing for a small homeland (on the example of selected literary
works).
10. Czesław Miłosz and Tomas Venclova.
11. Youth contestation movements in the BSSR, LSR and PRL in the
1980s. An attempt at characterisation.
12. Tearing down myths and prejudices - the contemporary face of
Lithuanian-Polish relations.
13 Contemporary national movements in Belarus.
14. Contemporary Lithuanian and Polish culture in the context of the
European Union.

Learning outcomes:
Knowledge: the graduate knows and understands:
- at a basic level, the specificity of various models of culture in the
anthropological perspective (traditional, noble, bourgeois, mass), the
processes of their transformation and mutual connections and emanations
in the symbolic and semiotic sphere, i.e. in the space of culture and art,
literature and history of the Belarus, Lithuania and Poland;
- basic knowledge of the European and global context of cultural
processes – is able to apply this knowledge to the culture, art, literature,
linguistic phenomena, as well as political, social and economic
phenomena of the Belarus, Lithuania and Poland at every stage of its
development;
- the broadly understood intercultural context at a basic level; has
knowledge about man as a subject constructing social structures and
cultural products, is aware of the principles of their functioning and the
resulting differences in the perception of social life by representatives of
different nationalities, ideological and religious groups and differently
understood minorities.
Skills:
graduates can:
- search, select, analyze and use the information he needs from various
sources;
- formulate and analyze research problems, select research methods and
tools, and conduct simple research in the field of cultural studies and
related disciplines concerning Belarus, Lithuania, Poland under the
supervision of a research supervisor;
- develop research skills, acquire knowledge independently, using the
support of a research supervisor; skillfully formulate thoughts, present
research results in the form of an oral or written statement (of various
types);
- conduct a critical analysis of cultural products specific to a given era in
the development of the Belarus, Lithuania, Poland; recognize different
types cultural products, analyze them, distinguish different perspectives
on the development of culture, being aware of the existence of differences
in cultural identities and context;
- independently prepare a written and oral statement, in Polish and a
foreign language, on selected topics from the field of cultural theory and
Belarus, Lithuania, Poland issues, present the results of their work in the
group forum.
Social competences:
the graduate is ready to:
- critically evaluate the knowledge they have, continuously improve their
skills and supplement the knowledge they have acquired;
- communicate effectively and live in society, including a society that is
culturally different from one's own, work in a group, cope with typical
professional situations, verify one's views through objective discussion
and assess one's knowledge.
Assessment criteria
Condition of admission to examinations is compulsory attendance in the
courses (according to Principles of studies at Faculty of Applied
Linguistics).
Courses will consist of discussion about scheduled literature or material
presented by tutor in form of presentation. Active participation in
discussion means that student contributes to discussion during at least
50% classes.
Student will also write one paper (3-6 pages) or presentation about topic
delimited by tutor.
Oral examination will contain two questions about material presented
during course.
Final assessment depends on:
Factual participation in discussion during course (20%).
Written paper or presentation about topic delimited by tutor (20%).
Oral examination containing two questions (60%).
(comprehensive answer to one question = 30%, partial answer to one
question = 15%).
