Audiovisual and performative culture in Central and Eastern Europe 3224-D4AUDIO

The course will explore issues related to the visual, audiovisual, and performing arts of Central and Eastern Europe. The course aims to introduce students to the most important phenomena in the correspondence between the visual, audiovisual, and performing arts of individual countries (selected points). The course will discuss selected visual and audiovisual phenomena. Examples of cultural products will represent the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, taking into account their cultural context, iconic culture, and often from a comparative perspective.
During second part students will deal with various examples of rituals and phenomena of the performance culture in the Central and Eastern Europe. There will be shown and explained issues like for example: spectacles and rituals (like for example carnaval), dance and its contexts, body art and performance, happening and other cultural practices (especially between body and art).

Learning outcomes
Knowledge (the student knows and understands):
● Has a basic knowledge and understanding of the specificity of various models of culture from an anthropological perspective (traditional, noble, bourgeois, mass), their transformation processes and interconnections, and their emanations in the symbolic and semiotic spheres, i.e., in the sphere of culture, art, literature, and the history of Central and Eastern European countries [K1_W03]
● Has a basic knowledge and understanding of the history and present of the region (two selected Central and Eastern European countries), as well as issues, concepts, and historical concepts related to the identification of Central and Eastern Europe as a region, with particular emphasis on cultural processes and phenomena in the context of social and political transformations [K1_W04].
● Has a basic knowledge and understanding of the European and global context of cultural processes – can apply this knowledge to the culture, art, literature, linguistic phenomena, as well as the political, social, and economic phenomena of the countries of the region at every stage of their development [K1_W05].
● Has a basic understanding of the broadly defined intercultural context; has knowledge of humans as entities constructing social structures and cultural products, is aware of the principles of their functioning and the resulting differences in the perception of social life by representatives of various nationalities, ideological and religious groups, and variously understood minorities [K1_W07].
Skills (graduates can):
● Can search for, select, analyze, and use necessary information from various sources [K1_U01]
● Can formulate and analyze research problems, select research methods and tools, and conduct simple research under the supervision of a research supervisor in the field of cultural and religious studies and related disciplines related to the Central and Eastern European region [K1_U02]
● Can develop research skills and independently acquire knowledge with the support of a research supervisor; Skillfully formulate thoughts and present research results in the form of oral or written statements (various types) [K1_U03]
● Is able to use theoretical approaches, research paradigms, and concepts appropriate to cultural and religious studies in typical professional situations [K1_U04]
● Is able to conduct a critical analysis of cultural products specific to a given era in the development of two selected countries of Central and Eastern Europe; recognize different types of cultural products of Central and Eastern European countries, analyze them, and distinguish between different perspectives on cultural development, being aware of the existence of differences in cultural identities and context [K1_U05].
● Is able to draw on acquired theoretical and practical knowledge and use it in typical professional statements concerning the history and present day of selected countries in the region, as well as the specificity of the region as a whole in a global context. Construct these statements logically, drawing on the perspectives of other participants in these communication situations [K1_U06]
● Is able to independently prepare written and oral statements, in Polish and a foreign language, on selected topics related to cultural theory and issues affecting countries in the region (culture, political, social, and economic sources, consequences and contexts of cultural phenomena, literature and language as media and cultural evidence, audiovisual and electronic media, social and religious relations and ties, etc.). Present the results of their work in a group setting [K1_U08]
Social competences (the student is ready to):
● Is ready to critically evaluate their knowledge, continuously improve their skills, and supplement their acquired knowledge [K1_K01].
● is ready to participate in cultural life and use its various forms [K1_U05].
Assessment criteria
I. The organization of classes:
1) Attendance at all classes, covered by the plan, shall be compulsory
2) It is not possible to have a resit if the reason of failing the credit was noncompliance with the requirement to participate in them. In such a case a student can be conditionally registered in an successive stage of study and can repeat the failed course.
3) In case of 30 hours in semester, 2 absences without justifying are acceptable. Missed classes must be made up in accordance with the requirements of the lecturer. The requirements are provided by the lecturer during the first class.
