Problems of culture of the countries of the East and Central Europe (I) - Belarus, Lithuania, Poland 3224-D3PKBLP-OG
The following problems will be discussed in classes in the first semester:
1. The problem of ethnogenesis of the Belarusian, Lithuanian and Polish
peoples. Genesis of the Belarusian, Lithuanian and Polish languages,
Mutual influence of the languages of the neighbouring nations.
2. Belarusian, Lithuanian and Polish folklore - characteristics.
3. The role of religion in the cultural process of Belarus, Lithuania and
Poland. The mutual influence of paganism and Christianity.
4. Roman and Byzantine Christianity in the material culture of the
Lithuanian-Belarusian and Polish areas in the Middle Ages.
5. Building a political alliance in the region, i.e. the Polish-Lithuanian
union in 1385.
6 The influence of Polish culture on the lands of the Grand Duchy of
Lithuania in the 15th and 16th centuries.
7. Baroque culture and art in the Lithuanian-Belarusian lands. The
influence of the Polish Baroque on the lands of the Grand Duchy of
Lithuania.
8. The development of spiritual and material culture in Vilnius - the
history of the capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from its foundation
to the fall of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
9. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth as a multicultural state. Jews,
Tatars, Karaites (everyday life, religion, education).
10. Ideas of the Enlightenment and reforms of the educational system in
the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 18th
century.
11. University of Vilnius (Imperial University of Vilnius) in the years
1803-1832 - lecturers, students, organisational activities.
12. Polish-Lithuanian-Byelorussian cultural heritage in the works of
Adam Mickiewicz.
13. Between the November Uprising and the January Uprising - changes
in the Polish-Lithuanian-Byelorussian lands in the years 1830-1864.
14. Nationality movements on Belarusian-Lithuanian-Polish lands from
the end of the 19th century to the outbreak of World War I.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge: the graduate knows and understands:
- in a basic degree the specificity of various cultural models in
anthropological terms (traditional, noble, bourgeois, mass), processes of
their transformation and interrelations and emanations in the symbolic
and semiotic sphere, and thus in the space of culture and art, literature
and language and history of Belarus, Lithuania and Poland;
- in a basic degree intercultural context;
- search, select, analyze and use the information it needs from various
sources;
- develop their research skills, independently and using the support of a
tutor, gain knowledge, skilfully formulate thoughts, present research
results in the form of oral or written (different types);
- carry out a critical analysis of the products of culture appropriate for a
given era in the development of Belarus, Lithuania and Poland; identify
various types of cultural products of these countries, conduct their critical
in-depth analysis, distinguish different perspectives on cultural
development, aware of differences in cultural identities and context;
- critical assessment of knowledge, continuous education and
complementing the acquired knowledge;
- active participation in cultural life, organizing it and using its various
forms.
Assessment criteria
Condition of admission to examinations is compulsory attendance in the
courses (according to Principles of studies at Faculty of Applied
Linguistics).
Courses will consist of discussion about scheduled literature or material
presented by tutor in form of presentation. Active participation in
discussion means that student contributes to discussion during at least
50% classes.
Student will also prepare one presentation about topic delimited by tutor.
Final assessment depends on:
Factual participation in discussion during course (40%).
Presentation about topic delimited by tutor (20%).
Oral examination (40%).
