Introduction to academic culture with knowledge of intellectual property protection is a course in which students prepare themselves to operate effectively in an academic and professional environment in order to develop future social and entrepreneurial competences. The Introduction to Academic Culture with Knowledge of Intellectual Property Protection, offered in the first semester of study, is designed to help students effectively and independently gather knowledge in their field of study and then skilfully organise and present it both within and outside the academic environment.
As part of the course, students:
1. acquire skills in working with cultural artefacts;
2. compile a bibliography; develop a bibliography;
3. formulate the topic, title, assumptions and objectives of a cultural research project;
4. master the technique of writing an academic paper (creating a list of items, references);
5. acquire the ability to write academic texts (proper preparation of the text, appropriate structure and division)
Thematic division of classes:
1. Introduction to academic culture.
2. Rules for creating texts and research projects.
3. Information on intellectual property protection I.
4. Formulating the topic of the thesis and critical evaluation of the topics of the student groups' own research projects.
5. Information on intellectual property protection II.
6. Discussion of the methodology of research conducted as part of student group research projects Composition of theses according to the requirements of the ESW cultural studies programme.
7. Principles of creating a bibliography of works conducted as part of student group research projects.
8. Discussion of the work plan conducted as part of student group research projects.

Knowledge (after completing the course, the student knows and understands):
-the principles of disseminating the results of scientific activity, including through open access (K_W08)
Skills (is able to):
- use knowledge from various disciplines of the humanities to creatively identify, formulate and innovatively
solve complex problems or perform research tasks, in particular to define the purpose and subject of scientific research in the field of the humanities,
- properly develop research methods, techniques and tools and apply them creatively;
- formulate a research hypothesis and draw conclusions based on the results of scientific research (K_U01, K_U02, K_U03, K_U11)
- communicate on specialist topics to a degree that enables active participation in scientific discussion within the
humanities (K_U10)
- disseminate the results of scientific activity, including in popular forms (K_U11)
Social competences: after completing the course, the student is ready to:
- communicate effectively and live in society, including in a society that is culturally different from their own,
- work in a group,
- cope with typical professional situations,
- verify their views through factual discussion and assessment of their knowledge (K_K01, K_K02, K_K03, K_K04)
Assessment criteria
The classes are seminar-based. In addition to ongoing preparation for classes, students are also expected to present the assumptions of a cultural research project.
Knowledge of POWI is assessed on the basis of a multiple-choice test.
In order to pass the course, students are required to attend classes in accordance with the Detailed Rules of Study at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics (Resolution No. 114 of the Faculty Council of 19 December 2017).
The final grade for the course consists of:
- substantive answers to questions asked during the course based on the material (30%)
- test result (40%)
- presentation of the topic and assumptions of the cultural research project (30%)
