The history of the culture of the countries of the region - Ukraine 3224-D1HKKRUKR
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the main issues in the cultural history of Ukraine ties against the backdrop of political and social history from the Middle Ages to 1991. Issues such as identity, cultural interplay, religious aspects, changes in customs and mentality, and reflection on the meaning of national history will be addressed. Students will develop research skills and learn to independently acquire knowledge, supported by a research supervisor.
The following topics will be discussed during the course:
1. Eastern Slavs until the mid-10th century. Eastern Slavic tribes and their culture
2. In the sphere of Byzantine culture. The Baptism of Rus and Its Cultural Heritage
3. Ruthenian Culture under Lithuanian Rule (13th–16th Centuries)
4. Under the Scepter of the Piast and Jagiellon Dynasties: Culture of Ukrainian Lands within the Polish Crown
5. Religious Transformations in Ukraine in the 16th–18th Centuries
6. Cossacks as a Socio-Political and Cultural Phenomenon
7. In the Austrian Partition
8. In the Russian Partition
9. Ukrainian National Revival
10. “National in Form, Socialist in Content”: Ukrainian Soviet Culture in the Interwar Period
11. Ukrainian Identity and Culture in the Second Polish Republic

Student workload includes:

Knowledge: upon completing the course, the graduate will know and understand:
- advanced knowledge of the history and contemporary culture of Ukraine as well as historical issues, concepts and ideas related to the emergence of Central and Eastern Europe as a region, with particular emphasis on cultural processes and phenomena in the context of social and political changes (K_W04)
- advanced knowledge of the European and global context of cultural processes – can apply this knowledge to the culture, art, literature, linguistic phenomena, as well as political, social and economic phenomena of Ukraine at every stage of their development (K_W05)
- advanced level of issues related to the formation of national and religious, socio-political and economic relations, including the creation and development of various forms of individual entrepreneurship in the region of Central and Eastern Europe (K_W06)
Skills: upon completing the course, the graduate is able to:
- search for, select, analyse and use necessary information from various sources (K_U01)
- conduct a critical analysis of cultural products appropriate for a given era in the development of Ukraine; recognize different types of cultural products of Central and Eastern European countries, analyze them, distinguish different perspectives on the development of culture, being aware of the existence of differences in cultural identities and context (K_U05)
Social competences: upon completing the course, the student is prepared to:
- critical assessment of existing knowledge, continuous learning and supplementing acquired knowledge and skills (K_K01)
- effective communication and living in society, including in a culturally diverse society, working in a team, coping with typical professional situations, verifying one's views through factual discussion and evaluating one's knowledge (K_K02)
- participating in cultural life, taking advantage of its various forms, as well as initiating activities in society and presenting tasks in an accessible form, including using information technology (K_K05).
Assessment criteria
I. The organization of classes:
1) Attendance at all classes, covered by the plan, shall be compulsory.
2) It is not possible to have a resit if the reason of failing the credit was noncompliance with the requirement to participate in them. In such a case a student can be conditionally registered in an successive stage of study and can repeat the failed course.
3) In case of 30 hours in semester, 2 absences without justifying are acceptable. Missed classes must be made up in accordance with the requirements of the lecturer. The requirements are provided by the lecturer during the first class.
II. Assessment Criteria
Classes will be conducted in the form of discussions on assigned readings or material presented by the instructor in a presentation. Substantive participation in the discussion means substantive participation in the discussion during at least 50% of the classes.
A written paper (3-6 seconds) or a presentation on a topic assigned by the instructor is also required. The deadline for submitting the written paper is set by the instructor during the first or second class. Students who are absent from these classes are required to consult the instructor.
The oral assessment will cover knowledge of the material covered in class during the semester and will include two randomly selected questions from the material covered in class.
The final grade will consist of:
Substantive participation in class (20%).
A written paper or presentation on a topic assigned by the instructor (20%).
Oral assessment (60%).
(full answer to the question = 30%, partial answer = 15%)
