The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the history of Russian culture in the context of political and social changes from the Middle Ages to the present day, using modern research perspectives such as the global turn, postcolonial criticism, the cultural turn and the memory turn, enabling a multifaceted analysis and reinterpretation of cultural phenomena on a regional and global scale. Students will improve their research skills and learn to independently acquire and critically analyse knowledge with the support of their academic supervisor.
The course will cover the following topics, among others:
1. The formation of cultural identity from medieval and early modern Russia to the present day.
2. The influence of the Orthodox religion on art, architecture and literature in Russia from a historical perspective.
3. The development of Russian literature and the formation of the literary canon.
4. Transformations in music and theatre from tsarist times to the present day.
5. Historical changes in the visual arts: icons, painting, avant-garde and contemporary art.
6. The role of language and education in the processes of shaping national culture: from the tradition of Cyril and Methodius to the reforms of the early 21st century.
7. Material and everyday culture from a historical perspective: customs, fashion, design.

Assessment criteria
In order to pass the course, students are required to attend classes in accordance with the Detailed Rules of Study at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics (Resolution No. 114 of the Faculty Council of Applied Linguistics of 19 December 2017).
Any absence exceeding two classes should be made up during office hours.
Classes will be conducted in the form of discussions on assigned readings or material presented by the lecturer in the form of a presentation. Substantive participation in the discussion means substantive participation in the discussion during at least 50% of the classes.
A written assignment (3-6 pages) or a presentation on a topic assigned by the lecturer is also required. The deadline for submitting the written assignment is the date set by the lecturer during the first or second class. Those absent from these classes are required to obtain information from the lecturer.
The oral examination will cover the material discussed in class during the semester and will include two randomly selected questions from the material discussed in class.
The final grade will be based on:
Substantive participation in class discussions (20%).
Written work or presentation on a topic assigned by the lecturer (20%).
Oral assessment (60%).
