Contrastive grammar and translation-oriented grammars 3223-L2GKGTE

The scope of theoretical topics includes: the definition and varieties of comparative linguistics, the concept of grammar, contrastive and confrontative grammar (concepts, objectives, types and varieties), the concept of tertium comparationis, grammatical contrasts and parallelisms between languages - degrees of congruence and equivalence, procedures, methods and types of grammatical confrontation of languages, translation-oriented grammar and its assumptions, other areas of application of contrastive grammar: language typology, linguistic description, lexicography, translation studies.
The practical aspect consists in the confrontation of selected grammatical categories of languages under comparison, e.g., the category of person, grammatical gender, verb tense and aspect, structures accommodated by verbs, as well as confrontation of phonetic and phonological systems, semantic/lexical systems and contrastive pragmatics.

Student work load:
Lecture: 30 hours
Students' own work in preparation for each seminar: 30 hours (2 hours before a seminar each week)
Exam preparation: 30 hours
Total: 90 hours

Prerequisites (description)

Successful completion of the previous year of study. The student uses the terminology of grammatical description acquired during such classes as descriptive grammar of Polish and descriptive grammar of the language of instruction

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student is able to identify major similarities and differences between linguistic structures in the languages being compared. The student possesses the necessary theoretical knowledge to compare of relevant structures in his/her B.A/M.A thesis.

Assessment criteria

Assessment is based on students' active participation in classes and the result of a fnial examination.
