Introduction to terminology 3223-3LWTE

The aim of the course is to familiarise the students with the basic concepts, theories and tools of terminology and terminography, including the principles of drafting definitions, methods of terminological work and principles of designing and evaluating specialised dictionaries.
At the outset, the students find out about the field of study of terminology studies and the meaning of the concept of term. Then, they learn about concepts which are fundamental for terminology albeit they originate from logic and philosophy, such as: concept and object, feature, relation and definition. This enables the students to move on to subjects which are more closely related to terminology per se, such as methods and principles of terminological work or designing LSP dictionaries.
The lecture is supported with visual material in the form of scans of pages from selected specialised dictionaries, thanks to which the students can see how the discussed solutions are applied and consider their usability.
In the course of the lectures, the instructor encourages the students to think independently and to participate actively, e.g. asking them to draft their own definitions, determine the target dictionary user or evaluate specific terminographic solutions.

Prerequisites (description)

The students are expected to possess general knowledge in linguistics and to know the fundamental concepts of specialised text linguistics.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is expected to:
