Specialised translation: English and Russian 3223-2UTSAR
Classes are devoted to translating general (press) texts written in Russian or in English into English/Russian. The aim of the course is to familiarise students with a range of translation techniques that make up the translator's tools. In particular the student will become familiar with differences and similarities between the languages in question and the translation issues resulting from them. During the course, the student will learn how to make a preliminary analysis and interpretation of a text and gain the ability to access, analyse, evaluate and select from a variety of sources of information necessary to complete the translation. The classes also cover rules for transcription and transliteration and train the student to use various types of dictionaries and online resources.
Student's workload:
Organised hours - 30 hours
Individual preparation for each class 2 hours per week - 30 hours
Preparation for getting the credit - 10 hours

On finishing the course, the student will:

- be able to identify various types of translation mistakes and explain why they came about

- be able to skillfully interpret a translated text and explain the aims of translation, as well as identify the potential target recipients of the text
- effectively be able to prepare, analyse, assess, select and use information connected with a translated text
- be able to recognise and correct various types of translation mistakes
3. social competences
- be able to work with other members of a group in order to diligently and successfully carry out a translation task
- understand the need to keep learning throughout one's life, deepening one's knowledge and honing acquired skills
