1. Lexicology and lexicography. Typology of dictionaries. Monolingual and multi-lingual dictionaries.
2. From the first glossaries to electronic dictionaries: diachronic review of the methods of description and evolution of approaches to lexicography
2. Basic elements of the lexical description: the concept of lexical units.
3. Characteristics of lexicographic definitions. Macrostructure and microstructure of the dictionary
4. Creating an appropriate entry in the monolingual dictionary: grammatical information, qualifiers, the criteria and the problems in defining meanings, lexical units, collocations, idioms, examplification.
5. Selection of lexical entries and criteria of description.
6. Normativism in lexicography
7. Polish contemporary lexicography: the basic polish dictionaries
8. Bilingual lexicography: the role of grammatical information, lexical equivalence, choosing the phraseology.
9. Bilingual dictionaries in understanding and creating autonomous enunciations in a foreign language. Macro and microstructure of a bilingual dictionary. The role of the examples and collocations in a bilingual dictionary.
10. Analysis of selected parts of bilingual dictionaries to understand and create texts in a foreign language.
11. Basis for creating a specialized dictionary. Gathering a corpus of specialized texts and the possibilities of its use. Determining the microstructure and macrostructure of a specialized dictionary.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student has:
1. Knowledge
- theoretical basis of lexicography;
- complexity and variety of definitions lexicographical;
- the principles of construction of a lexical entry;
2. Skills
- Uses the acquired methodology in their research;
- Can lay a list of lexical entries and idioms for his own research purposes;
- Is able to describe a lexicographical entry;
- Is able to assess the usefulness of the various publications of lexicographical field for his own research purposes.
Social competence:
- Is aware of the diversity of possible descriptions of language
- Uses the acquired competences to choose and describe lexical material
Assessment criteria
The course ends with an examination (test).
The evaluation is based on the verification of:
a) theoretical knowledge in the field of lexicography
b) practical skills in analyzing lexicographic data.
