Specialized translation: Italian 1 3223-1UTPW
The course is aimed at first year master's degree students.The Course is relevant to the professional needs of the students and the needs of the society where they will work as translators. Throughout the Course, the students will be able to improve their linguistic skills thanks to working on texts that include basic and intermediate specialised terminology. The texts will be verified thematically (business, UE institutions, law, technology, human sciences). The students are regarded as active participants in the learning process, with shared responsibility for their educational and professional development. The course is practical rather than theoretical. The Course recognizes the importance of, and strives to nurture, the personal and intellectual development of the students.
The students gain analytical skills through text recognition as well as grammatical and lexical information interpreting.
The students do lexical exercises based on authentic texts adjusted to the group level. The students gain knowledge about correlative structures (grammatical, phraseological, syntactic) and about terminology in both languages.
The students learn how to edit formal texts and different types of contracts.
The Course encourages continuing development of the students as autonomous professionals and reflective practitioners in the process of life-long learning. Owing to their participation in the classes, the students will be aware of their linguistic strengths and weaknesses and they will be provided with the opportunity to improve their abilities. One of the main goal of the Course is to motivate the students to achieve higher levels of language proficiency, both during the classroom activities and self-studies.
During the Course the students translate texts together, individually and in small groups.
Homeworks are assigned to the students in order to practice vocabulary and gain fluency in specialised text translation.
The Course is aimed at teaching the students to understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning; express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions.

Knowledge - the student is expected to:
– have advanced and specialised knowledge in the realm of written translation in different thematic areas, know the translation techniques, have the professional translation skills in Italian-Polish translation in given areas, specialised and not (K_W01, S_W01);
– have advanced and structured knowledge of terminological research (S_W03);
– understand specialised texts and know the vocabulary, grammatical structures and know how to stylistically edit those texts (K_W02, K_W04);
– have an in-depth knowledge of the modern specialised praxeology research theory and practice (K_W06);
– know and understand the basic terms and rules of intellectual property and copyright, and know how to manage the resources of intellectual property properly (K_W08);
– have the knowledge of the most popular computer programs that support the translation process (CAT); know the possible uses of machine translation; know the idiosyncrasy and the methods of specialised written translation (S_W10);
– know and understand terms and rules of intellectual property protection and the copyright laws (S_W11);
– have a structured knowledge of ethical norms and rules, and professional ethics (S_W12).
Skills - the student is expected to:
– know how to research, analyse, evaluate, select and integrate information from various sources and form critical judgement about the subject of specialised translation (K_U01);
– know how to obtain information and knowledge, broaden their theoretical knowledge and skills and turn them into practice (K_U03);
– know how to use knowledge from various humanistic disciplines in atypical professional situations regarding specialised translation (K_U04);
– know how to communicate with specialists from different areas via various channels and communication techniques in order to obtain the information needed for specialised translation (K_U08);
– have the translation skills in regards of texts of intermediate terminology level;
– have an advanced knowledge of preparing various types of written reports in Polish and in Italian (K_U09);
– know how to use general and specific written translation strategies and techniques (S_U01);
– know how to use computer programmes that help with translation, know how to format Polish and Italian texts (S_U07);
– know how to use dictionaries and other textual sources, know how to use the new media in order to solve linguistic problems; know the techniques necessary in the translator's job (S_U09);
– know how to manage all the stages of translation, know how to evaluate and verify the translation, know the motivation behind their choices and decisions (S_U11).
Socio-cultural competency - the student is expected to:
– know how to cooperate with other translators when the job needs to be divided (K_K01, S_K02);
– know how to lead a small team and be responsible for the results of its work (K_K02);
– know how to set priorities that will enable doing tasks set by themselves or by others (K_K03);
– know how to broaden their knowledge of the Italian language and of their mother tongue (S_K04);
– know how to draw conclusions from feedback; know how to manage time; keep in touch with the translators; work in multicultural surroundings; know the translator's surrounding especially the Italian circle (S_K05).

The final grade comprises:
- an in-class portfolio (50%)
- active participation in the classes (50%)
The overall result is established in accordance with the following scale:
60%-69% = 3.
70%-79% = 3+
80%-84% = 4.
85%-89% = 4+
90%-100% = 5.
The students’ achievements are assessed in accordance with the University regulations. The students are to attend all course classes. Prepared participation in class discussions – based on completion of the assigned reading and supportive collaboration with classmates – is also required. Each class absence has to be excused in the first week after the lesson missed.
