Specialized translation: Russian 1 3223-1UTPR
Classes designed for second-year students for whom Russian is the first language of specialization and who have mastered it at a minimum level of B2. Upon completion of the course, students should learn the language at level C1.
This course is a block of specialist translation courses, which develops the efficiency of translation of texts formulated in four types of languages for specyfic purposes:- legal and legal language,
- economic language,
- medical and pharmaceutical language,
- scientific and technical language,
In addition, texts on social sciences are foreseen.
Classes are conducted with different lecturers and include:
- Translation classes (the subject matter of translation is profiled in classes with individual teachers and covers the above mentioned subjects during the year);
- audiovisual translation classes (translation of media texts with elements of the above mentioned topics).
Students will learn the selected basic professional terminology in the above mentioned fields on the basis of different types of specialist texts. Thanks to the presented translation strategies, students will be able to efficiently translate specialist texts.
The emphasis is on :
- development of linguistic competence in foreign languages, especially in the field of phraseology and stylistics of specialist texts;
- development of general knowledge, cultural and sociolinguistic specificity (audience) L1 and L2;
- development of specialist knowledge in selected areas of the course;
- improvement of the knowledge of the mother tongue, especially in the text and stylistic plan;
- selected issues related to the analysis of specialist texts;
- Exercise the ability to use dictionary and text sources
The student's workload:
Total value of ECTS credits = 9
Contact hours (in the room) = I semester = 90h and II semester = 90h
= 6 ECTS (30h = 1 ECTS)
Student's own work outside the classroom:
Current preparation for classes - 80h = first and second semester after 40h
Preparation for the final examination - 10h

Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
- has an orderly knowledge of applied linguistics (including translators (K_W03);
- has a basic knowledge of the nature of the language and its complexity (K_W09)
- knows translation techniques and has translation competence in particular thematic areas (including specialist ones (S-W01).
LANGUAGE
- has the ability to prepare various types of written papers in Polish and German (K_U09);
- speaks Russian at C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (K_U11)
- efficiently translates general texts into the target language, and specialized using professional terminology, idiomatics, style and register (S_U02)
- is able to use dictionary and text sources in order to solutions to language problems (S_U09).
Social competences:
- is able to work in a group with different roles (K_K01);
- can identify and resolve dilemmas of inter-language communication (K_K04);
- is able to supplement and improve the acquired knowledge in Polish and Russian (S_K04);
Assessment criteria
Methods of evaluating student's work:
- activity during classes;
- homework;
- texts to be translated into grades.
- semester colloquium;
- other tasks improving the translator's skills;
Credits for a course component are based on the following conditions:
- Continuous assessment from classes: 33%
- evaluation of the work for evaluation: 33%.
- grade from the semester colloquium: 33%
(if there is no semester colloquium in a given particle, "continuous assessment from classes" and "assessment from works for evaluation" constitute 50% each)
Accepted scoring principles for current evaluation (in % is expressed as the degree of implementation of requirements):
The assessment includes lexical, grammatical, syntactic, stylistic and punctuation of the translation texts, as well as substantive verification of the content prepared by students.
- over 90% - 5 (very high adequacy of the text, proper stylistic and functional level, few errors of a non-substantive nature, high correct creativity in adjusting the text structures of the language 1. to the realities and rules of the language 2. Evaluation 5! requires a statement of the highest translation competence.))
- • 85%-89% – 4+
- • 80%-84% – 4
- • 70%-79% – 3+
- 60%-69% - 3 (maintained adequacy of the text, stylistic level of tolerance of the potential recipient; preservation of the general meaning of the text despite the occurrence of lexical-grammatical errors, 1-2 meaningful errors of a substantive nature, punctuation errors in the amount that allows the translated text to be understood)
The rules of cooperation between teachers and students:
- absences - permissible 3 unjustified absences in a semester (this is in accordance with the Regulations of the University of Warsaw).
- The condition for passing the course is the delivery of translated texts (and, if applicable, obtaining a positive grade from the semester colloquium) within the specified deadlines.
