Classroom

The student is expected to have advanced knowledge of the English language (at least C1 according to CEFR) and to have a good command of English grammar and vocabulary necessary to translate a specialist text. Also, the student should have basic knowledge of economic, legal and technical translation issues.

The student:

Knowledge:
is familiar with the theory of specialist translation terminology, knows the typical translation techniques used in specialist translation from English into Polish and vice versa (K_W01; S_W01);
is familiar with various sources of knowledge (standard and e-dictionaries, parallel texts, etc.), in English and Polish (K_W01; S_W01);

Skills:
can accurately select a translation strategy and translation techniques when translating a text from English into Polish and vice versa and reasonably justify their choices of the selected translation techniques (S_U15, S_U01, K_U09);
can select, analyze and evaluate authentic texts in English and Polish (K_U01, S_U11);
can translate a specialist text from English into Polish and vice versa, without interference (S_U07, K_U08, S_U02);

Socio-cultural competencies:
is able to interact and work in groups/in pairs, taking different roles in them; is able to manage a small team, taking the responsibility for the results of the team work (K_K01, K_K02);
is able to properly define the priorities for the implementation of a task set bythemselves and/or others; is able to manage the time appropriately and accomplish the tasks by the given deadline (K_K01, S_K03);
is able to broaden the knowledge acquired during the Course of Specialist Translation; is conscious of the need to regularly search for new sources of information (texts, articles, dictionaries, etc.) (S_K05; K_K06);
understands the need for constant professional development (S_K08);
accurately recognises and solves dilemmas related to the job of the translator (S_K09).

Assessment criteria:
- continuous assessment – 20%,
- homework assignments – 30%,
- midterm test – 20%,
- final test – 30%.

Grading criteria:
55%-69% = 3
70%-74% = 3+
75%-84% = 4
85%-89% = 4+
90%-100% = 5

A student is entitled to 3 absences.
