Linguistics seminar II - Lexicology 3222-52LEK2K-N
The aim of the course is to deepen students' knowledge of lexicology, which examines the relationships between vocabulary units in the language system, and to introduce them to contemporary lexicological research.
Students will learn about the lexeme as a basic unit of the dictionary system, word meanings, the concept of the semantic field and the relationships between its components, the origins of Ukrainian vocabulary and the mutual Ukrainian-Polish interlingual influences, the connections between vocabulary and extralinguistic realities, the spheres and scopes of lexical use in communication, the expressive and stylistic diversity of vocabulary, terminological lexis, and phraseologisms.
The estimated number of hours students should devote to achieving the defined learning outcomes for the course is 60 hours (2 ECTS):
organized hours – 30 hours
independent student work – 15 hours
preparation of a project for the final assessment – 15 hours.

After completing the course, the student
knows and understands:
S1_W01 the terminology and methodology of linguistic research in the field of lexicology in depth,
S1_W04 the connections between lexicological research and its complex interdependencies with other scientific disciplines, such as history or cultural studies in depth,
S1_W07 the key issues related to the development and functioning of the contemporary Ukrainian language in various fields in depth,
S1_W10 the Ukrainian language in speech and writing in accordance with the requirements specified for at least level B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages,
S1_W12 the basic concepts and principles of intellectual property protection and copyright; S1_U01 is able to properly select sources and information derived from them, perform critical analysis, creative interpretation, and presentation of information in the field of Ukrainian lexicology,
S1_U04 apply appropriate research methods and tools in the field of Ukrainian lexicology,
S1_U07 formulate and test hypotheses related to research in the field of Ukrainian linguistics,
S1_U11 conduct debates on specialized topics,
S1_U12 communicate orally and in writing in Ukrainian in accordance with the requirements for at least level B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages,
S1_U14 independently plan and implement lifelong learning;
S1_K01 is ready to critically evaluate their knowledge and the content they receive in the field of lexicology.
Assessment criteria
Conditions for admission to the final grade:
- attendance at classes
- ongoing preparation and completion of homework assignments (e.g., oral presentations on selected topics in Ukrainian lexicology; exercises involving lexical-semantic analysis of selected words/thematic-lexical groups; classification of Ukrainian vocabulary based on its origin, scope of use, and style). The grading criteria for the final exam, which involves preparing a research project on the lexical-semantic description of selected words/thematic-lexical group, are presented in percentages:
99% - 100% - 5 (very good grade with an exclamation point)
96% - 98% - 5 (very good grade)
87% - 95% - 4+ (good plus grade)
78% - 86% - 4 (good grade)
69% - 77% - 3+ (satisfactory plus grade)
60% - 68% - 3 (satisfactory grade)
Students are allowed two unexcused absences; each subsequent absence requires an excuse. The instructor determines how to make up the remaining unexcused absences.
Exceeding the number of excused and unexcused absences in 50% of the classes may result in failure to pass the course.
Rules for taking a make-up exam
If a student fails to pass the last class of the semester, they are entitled to receive a pass and a final grade under the same conditions in both the initial and make-up exam sessions.
