Development of communicative competence in the Ukrainian language 3222-50KKKJU3C-N
Practical exercises (15 weeks of classes per semester, 75 hours), concluded with a written exam.
The curriculum is designed to address the cognitive and communicative needs of students, as well as their goals related to acquiring qualifications necessary for their future profession or functioning in the country whose language they study. It also prepares graduates for the demands of the labor market.
The classes include a series of practical exercises focused on basic communicative situations through which students acquire vocabulary and grammatical rules of the language.
Knowledge of grammatical rules entails: the ability to construct grammatically and stylistically correct oral and written statements; the ability to systematically and intensively assimilate grammatical rules; care for language culture and grammatical accuracy in one’s own expressions.
The course develops language skills (especially communicative competence) at an advanced level, consolidates and improves the skills acquired during second-cycle studies, with emphasis on expanding and creating complex oral and written texts, acquiring broad knowledge in thematic, lexical, and stylistic areas, and systematizing the knowledge gained.
The number of hours the student should devote to achieving the defined learning outcomes for the course is:
Organized classroom hours – 75 hours (2.5 ECTS)
Estimated independent student work – 45 hours (including preparation for classes and exam)
Total: 120 hours (4 ECTS)
The course concludes with a written exam.
In case in-person classes cannot be held, the course will be conducted using remote communication tools recommended by the University of Warsaw (e.g., Zoom, Google Classroom).

Learning outcomes:
The student knows and understands:
- in an advanced manner, the relationships between philological research and their complex
interconnections with other academic disciplines (S1_W04);
- in an advanced manner, the psychological foundations of language functioning (S1_W05);
- in an advanced manner, key issues related to the development and functioning of contemporary
Ukrainian in various fields (S1_W07);
- the Ukrainian language in speech and writing in accordance with the requirements set for at least the C1
level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (S1_W10).
The student is able to:
- communicate on specialist topics with diverse audiences (S1_U10);
communicate in spoken and written Ukrainian in accordance with the requirements set for at least the C1
level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (S1_U12);
- manage a team (S1_U15).
The student is ready to:
- think and act in an entrepreneurial manner and to initiate actions in the public interest or for the benefit
of the social environment (S1_K02).
Assessment criteria
Conditions for passing the subject and being allowed to sit the exam:
- active participation in classes;
- systematic preparation of the assigned material for classes;
- timely completion of homework and writing of control tests within the specified time.
- passing the final exam.
The final grade consists of work during the semester (30%) and the exam result (70%).
The criteria for assessing tests and the exam are presented in the form of percentage thresholds:
60% - 68% - 3 (sufficient grade)
69% - 77% - 3+ (sufficient plus grade)
78% - 85% - 4 (good grade)
86% - 91% - 4+ (good plus grade)
92% - 97% - 5 (very good grade)
98% -100% - 5! (very good grade with exclamation mark)
The student is entitled to 2 out of every 30 hours of unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires submitting an excuse.
The form of crediting classes from which the student was absent is determined by the lecturer.
Exceeding excused and unexcused absences in 50% of classes may be the basis for failing the subject.
The student has the right to take the exam in the retake session in the same form as in the basic session and on condition of obtaining credit for the subject. The lecturer may establish additional conditions for crediting for absences.
