Linguistic undergraduate seminar 3222-34SJ5S-N
The seminar discusses issues related to the selection of a topic for an undergraduate thesis, the rules of writing a scientific paper, the formal side of writing a paper. The topic of part of the class is the functions of language, linguistic universals. The structure of the Ukrainian language, units and linguistic levels are considered. Students' mastery of the methods and directions of linguistics helps to understand the relations that occur between the elements and planes of the language system as an ordered system. Course topics include theoretical and applied, synchronic and diachronic linguistics. Issues in Slavic linguistics are discussed. At the same time, students prepare to submit an entire undergraduate thesis.
If it is not possible to conduct classes on a regular basis, classes will be held using distance communication tools, most likely Google Meet and others recommended by UW.

10 hours - preparation for classes and 20 hours - preparation for passing - 1 ECTS

Learning outcomes
A student completing the course:
Has advanced knowledge and understanding of:
research in the field of Ukrainian linguistics; is familiar with the main research schools in linguistics, the subject-specific and methodological specificity of the discipline, and its terminology; understands the specificity of philological research (S1_W01);
the interrelations between linguistic research and other academic disciplines (S1_W03);
the history and characteristics of the Ukrainian language (S1_W04);
strategies and techniques used in text translation, as well as basic terminology in the field of translation studies (S1_W05).
Is able to:
search for, analyze, evaluate, select, and use information concerning the Ukrainian language using various sources and methods in accordance with the specified topic of the bachelor’s thesis (S1_U01);
apply theoretical approaches characteristic of Ukrainian and comparative linguistics (S1_U02);
formulate a research problem and select methods appropriate for the proper development and presentation of the results of their work (S1_U05);
consciously apply translation strategies and methods (S1_U07).
The graduate is prepared to:
critically evaluate their own knowledge and scholarly texts in the field of linguistics (S1_K01);
adhere to ethical principles, including the proper use of other scholars’ academic achievements, particularly while preparing the bachelor’s thesis (S1_K03).
Assessment criteria
Conditions for passing the course (both at the first and second attempt):
active participation in work on individual research projects;
preparation of a chapter of the bachelor’s thesis.
The student is entitled to two unexcused absences; each subsequent absence requires submission of a justification. The lecturer decides whether the absence is accepted as justified.
Classes missed by the student must be made up during the lecturer’s office hours.
Exceeding 50% of justified and unjustified absences combined may constitute grounds for failing the course.
