Specialized Literary Studies Seminar II - Ukrainian Emigration and the MUR 3222-32UE5K-N
The classes are devoted to the history of Ukrainian emigration to Western Europe after World War II. The main topic will be the ways of organizing the Ukrainian diaspora in German refugee camps, and especially the activities of the Union of Ukrainian Writers "MUR", its literary, cultural and publishing activities. MUR played a fundamental role in shaping the Ukrainian literary process in emigration from 1945 to the end of the 1970s.
Topics covered:
1. Cultural activity of Ukrainians in camps
2. The origins of MUR
3. Literary debates: great literature and national rhetoric vs. orientation towards Europe
4. Europe from close up and the issue of identity in emigration
5. Literary writings of MUR
6. The most important figures: Yuri Shevelov, Volodymyr Derzhavin, Ihor Kostecky, Viktor Petrov
Student workload:

After completing the course:
The student knows and understands at an advanced level the history of Ukrainian literature from the earliest times to the present day (S2_W07)
The student is ready to critically evaluate the content they receive (S2_K01)
The student is ready to recognize the importance of knowledge in solving cognitive and practical problems (S2_K02)
The student is able to independently acquire knowledge in the field of Ukrainian literature and selected literatures from other Central and Eastern European countries, and conduct research, guided by the guidance of the academic supervisor (S2_U03)
The student is ready to critically evaluate the content they receive and academic texts in the field of literary studies (S2_K01)
The student is ready to recognize the importance of knowledge in solving cognitive and practical problems (S2_K02)
Assessment criteria
Conditions for passing the subject and admission to the final test:
- attendance at classes (three unexcused absences allowed)
- control of current preparation
- passing partial control tests
The course ends with a WRITTEN test.
The student has the right to take the credit test in the retake session in the same form as in the regular session, provided that he or she is admitted for taking the credit test.
Percentage thresholds:
99-100% - 5! (very good grade with an exclamation mark)
93-98% - 5 (very good grade)
87-92% - 4+ (good plus grade)
77-86% - 4 (good grade)
70-76% - 3+ (sufficient plus grade)
60-69% - 3 (sufficient grade)
