Specialized Literary Studies Seminar II - Ukrainian Emigration and the MUR 3222-32UE5K-N
The classes are devoted to the history of Ukrainian emigration to Western Europe after World War II. The main topic will be the ways of organizing the Ukrainian diaspora in German refugee camps, and especially the activities of the Union of Ukrainian Writers "MUR", its literary, cultural and publishing activities. MUR played a fundamental role in shaping the Ukrainian literary process in emigration from 1945 to the end of the 1970s.
Topics covered:
1. Cultural activity of Ukrainians in camps
2. The origins of MUR
3. Literary debates: great literature and national rhetoric vs. orientation towards Europe
4. Europe from close up and the issue of identity in emigration
5. Literary writings of MUR
6. The most important figures: Yuri Shevelov, Volodymyr Derzhavin, Ihor Kostecky, Viktor Petrov
Student workload:
- preparation for classes - 30 hrs. - 1 ECTS
- preparation for the final test - 1 ECTS

The student knows and understands in-depth the key issues related to the directions of development of contemporary Ukrainian literature and culture (K1_W08, K1_W09)
The student is able to use appropriate research methods and tools in the field of Ukrainian literary studies and Ukrainian cultural studies (K1_U05, K1_U06)
The student is ready to critically evaluate the knowledge they have and the content they receive (K1_K01)
Assessment criteria
Conditions for passing the subject and admission to the final test:
- attendance at classes (three unexcused absences allowed)
- control of current preparation
- passing partial control tests
Passing with a grade ends with a WRITTEN test.
Percentage thresholds:
99-100% - 5! (very good grade with an exclamation mark)
93-98% - 5 (very good grade)
87-92% - 4+ (good plus grade)
77-86% - 4 (good grade)
70-76% - 3+ (sufficient plus grade)
60-69% - 3 (sufficient grade)
