Specialized linguistics seminar I - Lexicology and word formation 3222-32LS5K-N
The seminar is intended to help students master the theory of lexis and word formation. Elements of lexis and word formation belong to the planes of the linguistic system as an ordered system. Previously, during descriptive grammar classes, students learned the theoretical principles of phonology, morphology and syntax, which are also planes of the language system. In this way, students' mastery of the theory of lexis and word formation complements their understanding of the relationships between the elements of the language system.
In turn, the lexis not only covers the set of all the words of a language, but is also a system itself. The lectures discuss elements of the lexical system of the Ukrainian language. The topics of the lectures are types of word meanings, polysemy and monosemy, lexical synonymy, antonymy, paronymy. One of the lectures is devoted not only to lexical homonymy, but also to interlingual Ukrainian-Polish homonymy. Students learn about the resources of native and borrowed vocabulary of the Ukrainian language, neologisms and archaisms, specialized vocabulary and jargons.
The classes examine the most important concepts of word formation, including: word-formation category, word-formation nest. The concept of word-formation type is related to the understanding of the productivity of various types in the Ukrainian language. The student should know the concept of morpheme and morpheme, understand the types of morphemes, morpheme variants, and morpheme functions. The linguistic material necessary for lexical-semantic and word-formation analysis expands students' linguistic competences because lectures are conducted in Ukrainian.
If it is not possible to conduct classes in a stationary form, classes will be held using distance communication tools, most likely Google Meet and others. recommended by the University of Warsaw.
