Selected issues from 19th century Ukrainian literature 3222-30WZL4K-N
The classes will discuss the most important achievements of Ukrainian 19th-century poetry, prose and drama. Particular attention will be paid to the works of Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko and Lesia Ukrainka. The characteristics of the socio-political events and processes of the 19th century will be discussed. The 1861 enfranchisement reform. The decrees of 1863 and 1876 directed against Ukrainian literature and language. The classes will cover literary processes from the period of Ukrainian classicism to the beginnings of modernism, romantic poetry, realistic prose, works of early modernists and expressionists.
The student's workload:

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student:
- knows and understands at an advanced level the history and contexts of Ukrainian literature in the nineteenth century K1_W07
- is able to search, critically analyze and evaluate, select and use information on Ukrainian literature of the 19th century. K1_U03
- is able to formulate and solve a research task in the field of Ukrainian literary studies K1_U06
- is able to plan and organize work individually and in a team K1_U12
- is ready to critically evaluate his knowledge and received content K1_K01
Assessment criteria
The condition for passing the course and admission to the exam is:
• systematic preparation for the classes of the given material
• conducting and a written presentation of an individual research project
Semester work requirements:
1. The author should formulate a research problem, that is, make a thesis which he will try to verify (prove or disprove) in the work.
2. Before starting to write a thesis, its plan and the list of literature should be consulted with the teacher.
3. The paper should be 5-8 pages of standard text, ie the length should not be less than 10,000 characters with spaces and greater than 15,000 characters with spaces (including footnotes). The work should contain a list of the used bibliography (the volume of the list of the used bibliography does not, however, be included in the above-mentioned volume of the essay).
4. The structure of the work should include: introduction, development, ending, bibliography. The introduction should contain: thesis (formulation of the research problem), objectives of the work, justification for the choice of topic, description of the subject and subject literature. Develop a proper analysis of the texts. The conclusion should include the conclusions resulting from the research.
5. Each page of the work must be provided with bibliographic, source or reference footnotes.
6. The text of the work should be edited in accordance with the following rules: - font: Times New Roman Normal, size 12, - foreign language phrases in italics, - line spacing: 1.5 lines, - standard margins (top, bottom, left and right: 2.5 cm), - title of the article: Times New Roman Normal font, size 14, bold.
7. Footnotes should be placed in the text as footnotes, font Times New Roman Normal, size 10, line spacing: 1 line. A footnote is treated like a sentence, so it should start with a capital letter and end with a period. In the text, the number of the footnote should be placed without spaces after the word, before the comma. At the end of the sentence, the footnote number is placed before the full stop at the end of the sentence. Notation of footnotes and bibliographies according to SUV standard.
The subject ends with a written exam according to the following criteria, presented in the form of percentage thresholds
60% - 68% - 3 (satisfactory)
69% - 77% - 3+ (satisfactory plus)
78% - 86% - 4 (good)
87% - 93% - 4+ (good plus)
94% - 97% - 5 (very good)
98% -100% - 5! (very good grade with an exclamation mark)
Assessment criteria:
- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes covering all the essential ones
aspects - 5.0 (very good)
- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes covering all the essential ones
aspects with a small number of errors or inaccuracies - 4.5 (good plus)
- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes, omitting some (less
important) aspects - 4.0 (good)
- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes, omitting some of the essential ones
aspects and with significant inaccuracies - 3.5 (satisfactory plus)
- achievement of the assumed learning outcomes disregarding important aspects
or with serious inaccuracies - 3.0 (satisfactory plus)
- failure to achieve the assumed learning outcomes - 2.0 (unsatisfactory)
The condition for admission to the exam is also attendance. The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires a justification. The lecturer decides about the acknowledgment of the absence.
The form of crediting the classes in which the student was absent is determined by the lecturer.
Exceeding excused and unjustified absences for 50% of classes may be the basis for failing the course.
The conditions for the re-sit exam are the same as for the credit test for the main term.
