The classes provide students with information on the theory of translation, introduction to the art of translation, and honing the translation skills using strategies.
The classes are devoted to analysing documents on the art of translation and practical exercises in solving communication-related problems.
Students' work:
30 h in-class activity – 1 ECTS
30 h preparation – 1 ECTS
Topics:
1. What is translation? An attempt to define the term against real translation systems and their integral elements.
2. Participants in the translation system. Communication in the presence of the translator.
3. Making texts in the target language and translator's strateies.
4. Concepts related to the translation process, translation models and methods of performing the translation task in the target language.
5. Understandings of equivalence. Degrees of equivalance.
6. The role of translator as a mediator and the creator of relationships between the target text and the original text. Ethics in translation.
7. Translation-related problems. Arguments against the notion that translation may prove impossible.
8. Problems during tranlsation of written texts and problems with interpreting: consecutive and simultaneous.

Assessment criteria
Rules to be obeyed in view of the final test:
1. Control of the degree of being prepared for the class - 20%
2. Examination of knowledge on translation - 80%
The crietria for evaluating the final (written) test:
60% – 68% - 3 (satisfactory)
69% - 77% - 3+ (satisfactory plus)
78% - 86% - 4 (good)
87% - 95% - 4+ (good plus)
96% - 98 % - 5 (very good)
99% -100% - 5 !(excellent)
