The aim of the course is to provide students with the basics of specialist knowledge, a practical introduction to the art of translation and to develop skills in mastering various translation strategies.
The classes will be devoted to the analysis of theoretical texts devoted to the art of translation and practical exercises in translating various types of texts:
- fiction
- journalistic texts
- scientific texts
- official documents.
Student workload
Estimated number of hours the student must devote to achieving the learning outcomes defined for the course – 60 hours. (2 ECTS)

Upon completion of the course, the student
1. Knowledge:
- has in-depth knowledge of selected translation strategies and techniques K1_W05
2. skills:
- is able to apply theoretical concepts specific to translation studies K1_U07
3. social competences
- is prepared to critically evaluate their own knowledge and the content they receive K1_K01.
Assessment criteria
Requirements for passing the course with a grade:
- attendance at classes
- keeping up with coursework
- submission of translation assignments
- preparation of a translation project
Assessment components:
- 50% continuous assessment (preparation for classes, participation in class, homeworks)
- 50% final written translation
Assessment criteria for the final graded assessment, which is
an individual project testing acquired language skills,
a/ consistency of the translation’s content with the original
b/ completeness of the translation
c/ linguistic accuracy (vocabulary, grammar, spelling and punctuation)
d/ stylistic acc
Grading scale:
Students are entitled to 2 absences. If there are more than 2 absences, including excused ones, the student should contact the lecturer to request a method of assessment for the course material.
Exceeding 50% of class absences, whether excused or unexcused, constitutes grounds for failing the course.
Rules for sitting the resit examination:
If a student has not passed the course by the final class of the semester, they are entitled to sit the examination and receive a final mark under the same conditions during both the main and resit examination periods.
