Old Church Slavonic 3222-30SCS4K-N
The course introduces students to the circumstances surrounding the creation of Old Church Slavonic, its origins, and its place among other Slavic and Indo-European languages. It introduces them to the writing system of the ancient Slavs, their alphabets, and key linguistic monuments, as well as the role it played in the emergence and development of the ancient Ukrainian literary language. Students learn the phonetic system (vocalic and consonant) of Old Church Slavonic and select aspects of nominal and verb inflection. They acquire practical skills related to the linguistic analysis of Old Church Slavonic texts.
The course prepares students for research in diachronic linguistics.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student
knows and understands
- at an advanced level the connections between the study of Old Church Slavonic and the study of Ukrainian and other Slavic languages, history, and ethnology K1_W03

Assessment criteria
Admission requirements for the final exam:
- class attendance
- ongoing preparation, including tasks involving the linguistic analysis of Old Church Slavonic texts, preparing for research in the field of Slavic linguistics
The evaluation criteria for the written exam, which consists of a test with open and closed questions to assess acquired knowledge, are presented in the form of percentage thresholds:
99% - 100% - 5 (very good grade with an exclamation mark)
96% - 98% - 5 (very good grade)
87% - 95% - 4+ (good plus grade)
78% - 86% - 4 (good grade)
69% - 77% - 3+ (satisfactory plus grade)
60% - 68% - 3 (satisfactory grade)
Students are allowed two unexcused absences; each additional absence requires a Excuses. The lecturer decides whether an absence is recognized.
The form of crediting classes from which the student was absent is determined by the lecturer.
Exceeding 50% of excused and unexcused absences may constitute grounds for failing the course.
Rules for taking the make-up exam:
Students have the right to take the exam in the make-up session in the same format as in the regular session, provided they receive a credit for the course.
