Practical English course I 3222-30PA1C-NZ
The aim is allow the students to master English language skills at B1+, the level which enables communication in different everyday life situations, while further acquanting them with the knowledge of life in the English speaking countries. The aim is to master the following B1 English language competences:
A student can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. They can understand the main point of many radio or TV programmes on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear (listening).
A student can understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job-related language. They can understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in personal letters (reading).
They can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst traveling in an area where the language is spoken. Students can enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events). (spoken interaction).
A student can connect phrases in a simple way in order to describe experiences and events, their dreams, hopes and ambitions. They can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. They can narrate a story or relate the plot of a book or film and describe their reactions. (spoken production).
A student can write simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. I can write personal letters describing experiences and impressions. (writing).
The content of the study:
a student gets acquainted with the following lexis domains:personality, travel, work;
a student is prepared to use the following grammar structures both in writing and speaking: present continuous versus present simple, present perfect simple versus past simple, present perfect simple versus present perfect continuous;
a student knows the rules according to which a for and against essay, covering letter and CV are written.
Didactic methods:
B1-B2: communicative approach including the following techniques: imitation, synonym-antonym, filling in the gaps, drills, Polish equivalent, mini drama, transformation, definitions, paraphrasing, interview
Student workload (2ECTS):
60 hours
Assisted work – 2 hours a week x one semester= 30 hours
Self-study – 15 hours-preparation for classes, 15 hours- preparation for exam

Assessment criteria
The course has 2 ECTS credits = 60 hours
30 hours in the classroom
15 hours - development of the material and presentation
15 hours - preparing for the final assessment
Grading criteria:
Requirements to be met to be given a pass (in the first and second attempt) and be able to take the final test (in the first and second attempt),
grading elements:
The criteria of the written test are expressed in the form of percentage values
60% – 68% - 3
69% - 77% - 3+
78% - 86% - 4
87% - 95% - 4+
96% - 98 % - 5
99% -100% - 5 !
A student is entitled to 2 unexcused absences, each next one requires the submission of a doctor's certificate. A lecturer has the right to accept the absence.
A lecturer decides on the manner of catching up with the material discussed during the classes a student has not attended.
