Learning Ukrainian 3222-30NJU2C-NZ

Higher group is dedicated for students who know Ukrainian. Work concentrates on proper use of language and language awarness, so as students after course can recognise mistakes and avoid them.
The content is relative to the cognitive and communicative needs of the participants. Accordingly, the classes cover a series of practical exercises (lexical and grammatical). The aim is to develop language competences, enabling the learner to use vocabulary and grammatical means through:
-active listening to texts, short radio / television programs, and revision of vocabulary already learned (expressions and sentences);
-listening to native-speakers and practicing communication skills and speaking in short dialogues with the native-speaker;
-practicing and solidifying lexical material and grammatical structures in written and oral formats;
- correcting mistakes.
Along with text books, specially selected short excerpts of press articles, literary texts, and Internet resources are used. The following techniques and didactic tools are used in classes: audiovisuals and multimedia, diverse recordings, and mnemonics.

The content of the teaching is subordinated to the assumption of opening up to the cognitive and communicative needs of students, classes include a series of practical exercises focused on basic communicative situations, through which students acquire vocabulary and grammatical rules of the language. Much attention is paid to correctness issues - spelling, grammar, punctuation and removing Russian-Ukrainian interference (so-called surzhyk).
Classes are conducted in Ukrainian. Their aim is to develop the following competences:
- listening toadapted unadapted texts and oral statements of native speakers of Ukrainian;
- oral exercises (conversations on various topics);
- learning vocabulary related to various areas of life;
- practicing communication and speaking skills using phrases and sentences,
- correctness exercises.
The exercises develop communicative competence - the student has the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the lexical resource related to the subject being studied, constructions that allow for free discussion of the topic in a general way. The classes use appropriately selected fragments of textbooks, press, literary texts, texts from the Internet, fragments of films and radio and television recordings. The prepared teaching materials are intended to check the understanding of texts, the ability to use the words and phrases learned. Innovative methods, techniques and teaching aids are used during the classes - audiovisual and multimedia materials, various recordings.

After completing the course, the student has greater linguistic awareness, is more critical of their own texts and the texts they work with.

Attendance at classes is mandatory. The student is entitled to 2 (for 30 hours) unexcused absences. Each additional absence requires the student to submit justification. The recognition of the absence is left to the teacher's discretion.
If the total number of unexcused and excused absences is more than half of the total number of class hours, this could be the basis for failure of the course.
