Trends in contemporary Ukrainian literature 3222-30KRLU1K-N
The course discusses the most important trends in the development of Ukrainian literature of the second half of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty first century. The course includes an analysis of transformations in the literary process, from the works of the generation of the 1960s and dissident literature of the Soviet period, through phenomena connected with the political transformation, the activity of the generation of the 1980s, and the development of Ukrainian postmodernism in the first decades of independence, to new literary themes and forms related to the experience of war after 2014. Particular attention is devoted to the relationship between literature and the social, political, and cultural transformations of contemporary Ukraine.

Total: 90 hours – 3 ECTS
If it is not possible to conduct classes on university premises, classes shall be held with the aid of distance learning tools, most likely Zoom, Google Meet, or others recommended by the University of Warsaw.

The course discusses the most important trends in Ukrainian literature in the second half of the 20th century. Starting with the post-war period, we will trace the groundbreaking stages of the development of independent Ukrainian literature in the era of totalitarianism (the generation of the 1960s and 1970s), the specificity of the literary process during the period of political transformation and the first decade of Ukrainian independence. We will discuss the specificity of Ukrainian postmodernism on the basis of selected literary works by Yuri Andrukhovych. |

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will:
know and understand the media context of Ukrainian literature and contemporary forms of literature (K1_W07)
be able to search for, critically analyze and evaluate, select and use information on Ukrainian literature (K1_U03)
be able to use theoretical approaches specific to Ukrainian literature (K1_U04)
formulate and solve a research task in the field of Ukrainian literary studies (K1_U06)
be ready to critically evaluate their knowledge and the content they receive (K1_K01)
Assessment criteria
Written exam.
Requirements for admission to the exam:
- class attendance,
- systematic preparation of the assigned material for classes,
- presentation.
Assessment components:
- continuous, formative assessment (ongoing preparation for classes, active participation) – 15%
- in-class presentation – 15%
- exam – 70%
The course concludes with a written exam, where the assessment criteria are presented in the form of percentage thresholds.
98%–100% – 5! (very good grade with an exclamation mark)
91%–97% – 5 (very good grade)
84%–90% – 4+ (good plus grade)
76%–83% – 4 (good grade)
68%–75% – 3+ (satisfactory plus grade)
60%–67% – 3 (satisfactory grade)
Students are allowed two unexcused absences (out of 30 hours); each subsequent absence requires an excuse. The lecturer decides whether an absence is excused.
The form of credit for classes from which the student was absent is determined by the lecturer.
Exceeding the number of excused and unexcused absences in 50% of classes may constitute grounds for failing the course.
