Development of communicative competence in the Ukrainian language 3222-30KKKJU2C-NZ
The course content is designed to address the cognitive and communicative needs of students. The classes include a series of practical exercises focused on basic communicative situations, through which students acquire vocabulary and grammatical principles of the language. Considerable attention is devoted to issues of linguistic correctness—orthography, grammar, punctuation—as well as eliminating Russian – Ukrainian interference.
The classes are conducted in Ukrainian. Their aim is to develop the following competencies:
- understanding basic spoken messages;
- engaging in oral exercises (conversations on various topics);
- learning vocabulary related to different areas of everyday life;
- practicing communication and speaking skills through the use of phrases and sentences;
- practicing linguistic correctness.
The exercises develop communicative competence: students are introduced to the vocabulary relevant to each topic and to linguistic structures that enable them to communicate freely and coherently at a general level. The classes make use of carefully selected excerpts from textbooks, press materials, literary texts, online content, as well as film clips and audio recordings. The prepared teaching materials are intended to assess text comprehension and the ability to use newly learned words and expressions. Innovative methods, techniques, and teaching tools are applied in class, including audiovisual and multimedia materials and various recordings.
Student workload:
During organized classes – 120 hours; 4 ECTS
Independent work – 60 hours; 2 ECTS
Preparation for the written exam – 30 hours; 1 ECTS
Preparation for the oral exam - 30 hours; 1 ECTS
Total: 240 hours (8 ECTS)

Learning outcomes
K1_W09 – knows Ukrainian in speech and writing in accordance with the requirements specified for level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
K1_U09 – is able to communicate in spoken and written Ukrainian in accordance with the requirements specified for level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
K1_U12 – is able to plan and organise work individually and in a team.
Assessment criteria
Conditions for passing the course and taking the exam:
- class attendance;
- ongoing preparation check;
- passing midterm tests
Assessment components:
- continuous, formative assessment (ongoing preparation for classes, active participation, review papers, and partial tests) – 30%;
- final exam score: 70%.
Written performance evaluation criteria:
a/ linguistic accuracy,
b/ relevance to the topic,
c/ composition,
d/ length of work,
Oral performance evaluation criteria:
a/ coherence and fluency of the presentation,
b/ linguistic accuracy,
c/ relevance to the topic,
The course concludes with a written and oral exam, with the evaluation criteria presented as percentage thresholds (points obtained from the oral and written exams):
60% – 68% - 3 (satisfactory grade);
69% - 77% - 3+ (satisfactory plus grade);
78% - 85% - 4 (good grade);
86% - 91% - 4+ (good plus grade);
92% - 97% - 5 (very good grade);
98% -100% - 5! (very good grade with an exclamation mark).
Students are allowed two unexcused absences (out of 30 hours); each subsequent absence requires an excuse. The instructor determines whether an absence is recognized.
The form of credit for classes from which the student was absent is determined by the instructor.
Exceeding 50% of excused and unexcused absences may constitute grounds for failing the course.
The student has the right to complete the course and take the retake exam under the same conditions as the first deadline.
