Development of communicative competence in the Ukrainian language 3222-30KKKJU2C-NZ
The course content is designed to address the cognitive and communicative needs of students. The classes include a series of practical exercises focused on basic communicative situations, through which students acquire vocabulary and grammatical principles of the language. Considerable attention is devoted to issues of linguistic correctness—orthography, grammar, punctuation—as well as eliminating Russian – Ukrainian interference.
The classes are conducted in Ukrainian. Their aim is to develop the following competencies:
- understanding basic spoken messages;
- engaging in oral exercises (conversations on various topics);
- learning vocabulary related to different areas of everyday life;
- practicing communication and speaking skills through the use of phrases and sentences;
- practicing linguistic correctness.
The exercises develop communicative competence: students are introduced to the vocabulary relevant to each topic and to linguistic structures that enable them to communicate freely and coherently at a general level. The classes make use of carefully selected excerpts from textbooks, press materials, literary texts, online content, as well as film clips and audio recordings. The prepared teaching materials are intended to assess text comprehension and the ability to use newly learned words and expressions. Innovative methods, techniques, and teaching tools are applied in class, including audiovisual and multimedia materials and various recordings.
The course concludes with a written examination in the form of a test.
Number of hours per semester: 120 (9 ECTS).
Student workload:
– contact hours: 60 hours (7 ECTS);
– independent study: 30 hours (1 ECTS);
– preparation for the exam: 30 hours (1 ECTS).

K1_W09 – knows Ukrainian in speech and writing in accordance with the requirements specified for level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
K1_U09 – is able to communicate in spoken and written Ukrainian in accordance with the requirements specified for level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
K1_U12 – is able to plan and organise work individually and in a team.
Assessment criteria
The course ends with an exam.
Conditions for passing the course and being admitted to the final credit:
- attendance;
- active participation in classes;
- systematic preparation for classes assigned material;
- timely completion of homework and writing control tests in the allotted time.
Passing the control tests for the penultimate class in the semester.
The following criteria are used for assessment:
- achievement of all intended learning outcomes, covering all essential aspects – 5.0 (very good);
- achievement of intended learning outcomes, covering all essential aspects with a small number of errors or inaccuracies – 4.5 (good plus);
- achievement of intended learning outcomes with omission of some (less essential) aspects – 4.0 (good);
- achievement of intended learning outcomes with omission of some essential aspects and with significant inaccuracies – 3.5 (satisfactory plus);
- achievement of intended learning outcomes with omission of essential aspects or with serious inaccuracies – 3.0 (satisfactory);
- failure to achieve the intended learning outcomes – 2.0 (unsatisfactory).
Components of the final grade:
- continuous/ formative assessment (regular class preparation, participation) – 50%;
- mid-semester tests / written assignments – 50%.
Criteria for assessing written assignments:
a) linguistic accuracy;
b) relevance to the topic;
c) composition;
d) required length.
Criteria for assessing oral performance:
a) coherence and fluency;
b) linguistic accuracy;
c) relevance to the topic.
The final grade consists of coursework during the semester (30%) and the final exam result (70%).
The course ends with a written exam / graded credit with assessment based on the following percentage thresholds (points from the written and oral exam):
60% – 68%*– 3 (satisfactory);
69% – 77% – 3+ (satisfactory plus);
78% – 85%– 4 (good);
86% – 91% – 4+ (good plus);
92% – 97% – 5 (very good);
98% – 100%*– 5! (excellent with distinction)
The condition for admission to the course is attendance at classes (in accordance with the Study Regulations at the University of Warsaw).
A student may have 2 unexcused absences per 30 hours; each additional absence requires justification. The instructor decides whether an absence is accepted.
The form of crediting classes from which the student was absent is determined by the lecturer.
Exceeding 50% of excused and unexcused absences*may result in failing the course.
