History of Belarus up until the End of the 18th Century
Winter semester:
The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the conflicts, relationships, and basic problems in the history of the Belarusian lands from antiquity to the partitions of the Republic of Poland. During the classes the following issues will be discussed:
Sources and literature about the history of Belarus.
The name of the state and nation. Periods in the history of Belarus.
Slavic issues. The ethnogenesis of Eastern Slavs.
The development of the Belarusian ethos until the end of the 18th century, identity issues of the nations of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
Statehood in the territory of Belarus: from the principality of Polotsk to the partitions of the Republic of Poland.
Student workload:
30 hours – in class, 1 ECTS;
30 hours - preparing for class assignments, 1 ECTS.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge: the student understands and has an advanced knowledge of
facts and historical changes and their significance for the contemporary world of culture, social, economic and political life;
theories and concepts of the history of ideas.
Skills: the student can:
search for, analyse, evaluate, select and use information by consulting sources in various langua-ges, including on-line sources;
draft correct, clear and coherent papers in Polish and in foreign languages on selected topics;
prepare presentation in Polish and in foreign languages concerning more detailed topics by using various theoretical approaches and sources;
plan and organise individual work and work in a team (including interdisciplinary tasks);
individually plan and pursue his or her own process of lifelong learning.
Social competencies: the graduate is ready to:
critically evaluate his or her knowledge and the content he or she receives;
recognise the significance of knowledge in solving epistemic and practical problems as well as resort to expert opinion.
Assessment criteria
Condition for admission to final examination is participation in the classes.
The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence. Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.
