1. Main issues of Translation studies, including an overview of definitions, translation types by Jakobson, the Holmes map, classification of translation.
2. Early history of translation (e.g. Cicero, Horace, St Jerome, Schleiermacher, Levý).
3. Equivalence: an overview of the concept (e.g. Jakobson, Nida and Taber, translation in Germany, descriptive translation studies).
4. Strategies and techniques in translation (e.g. Vinay and Darbelnet, Newmark).
5. Translation in the 20th century: an overview of theories (e.g. functional theories, Skopostheorie, descriptive translation studies, cultural and ideological turns, hermeneutic approach, cognitive theories).
6. New trends in Translation Studies: Audiovisual translation, localisation, CAT tools.
7. Interpreting: definitions, main types and theories.
8. Translator’s competencies.
9. Errors in translation.
10. Translations Studies in Poland.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student:
1. KNOWLEDGE:
- knows the subject, methodology as well as basic terminology used in Translation Studies
- sees interdependencies between various theories
2. SKILLS:
- can use basic terminology when analysing written translations
- can present an analysis of written translations
- can analyse the source text and indicate sources of potential errors
- can indicate sources of errors in translation
- can justify his/her own choices in the process of translation
3. SOCIAL COMPETENCIES:
- can actively participate in teamwork as well as in work of organisations and institutions dealing with translation studies
