History of Belarussian literature - 20th century (1920-1940) 3221-S1-0HL31A
During the course literature processes that occured in Belarus in 1920-1940 are discussed. The first writers organisations: Maladniak, Polymia, Uzvyshsha – their aims, assumptions, meaning. On the background of particular organisations actions conflict of generations is discussed: opinions of particular writers about Belarusian literature tradition, the first formal experiments, literature content changes. Emphasis is placed on the meaning of political changes for Belarusian literature development: the meaning and characteristic of belarutenization in 1920’s, representatives of both generations relationships to communism, socialist realism influence on literature process forming in Belarus. There are also discussed such problems as: individual life stories of particular writers in the context of social and political changes: authorities repressions in 1930’s and their consequences, an idea and meaning of fictional Liberation of Belarus Organisation. The work of particular novelists and poets is also considered for relations with social realism and nationalism. In such a context chosen motives are analysed: national identity and its implications, folklore, fatherland, mother, countryside, social role and character of family in communistic reality, collectivisation and kulaks problem, lives of former decision makers, partisan war, collaboration, etc. In particular works there are also emphasised esthetical values that have an influence on Belarusian literature development: imaginism, expressionism, psychologism, behaviourism and other. There are discussed such Belarusian writers works as: Yanka Kupala: poems from 1920-1940, „Beznazounaye, drama „Tuteyshya”; Yakub Kolas: fables from 1920-1940, novel “U paleskay glushy”, poem „Symon-muzyka”; Maxim Harecki: novel „Na imperyalistychnay wayne”, Yazep Pushcha: poems; Uladimir Dubouka: poems: „Kruhi”, „I puprurovyh vietrazey uzvivy”, „Shturmuyte buduchyni avanposty”, „Belaruskaya Aryadna”, poems from „Paleskaya rapsodya”; Mihas Zarecki: stories: „Radasc”, „Smierts”, „Vorahi”, „Zhiunaya”, „Dvoe Zvirouskih”, „Kvetka pazhouklaya”, mininovels: „Oy, latseli husi”, „Holy zvier”, novel „Vazmo”; Kuzma Chorny: novels „Lavon Bushmar”, „Luba Luk’ianskaya”, „Poshuki buduchyni”; Maxim Tank: poems; Kandrat Krapiva: dramas: „Hto smiayetsa aposhnim”, „Partysany”, chosen fables.
Exercises are designed to deepen the knowledge acquinted during the lecture, to develop skills helping in understanding a literary text.
Estimated number of hours that a student should spend on mastering the content is approximately - 90 (60 hrs. of classes and 30 hours. of indyvidual studying)

After completing the course, student:
1. KNOWLEDGE:
- knows the subject and methodology characteristics and the basic terminology used in literary and language studies
- recognizes main directions of Belarusian studies
- knows particular periods of Belarusian literature development
- recognizes authors and particular Belarusian literary works especially including literature to 1980’s
- knows the basic methods of literature analysis and interpretation related to Belarusian tradition
2. SKILLS:
- can analyse literary works using various sources and methods
- can prepare individual literary or linguistic analyses using appropriate methods and research tools
- can recognize the main Belarusian literature works especially including those created to 1980’s and is able to make their critical analysis
- can evaluate the meaning of particular authors’ work on the history of literature background
- can use main literary terms in the process of literature analysis
- can prepare individual papers on literature and language topics
- can present the opinions of researchers concerning Belarusian literature and language and forms own conclusions concerning the development of literature and language
- can recognise the meaning of particular historical events for the development of Belarusian literature and language
- can communicate using various channels and communicative techniques with specialists in the field of Belarusian philology
- can properly interpret the development of Belarusian national liberation idea and its reflection in the creations of culture
3. SOCIAL COMPETENCES:
- can organise individual and group work concerning problem analysis of Belarusian culture occurrences
- correctly identifies and resolves dilemmas of working in the profession
- is aware of the responsibility for preserving the cultural heritage of Belarus
Assessment criteria
The final grade will take into account the student's activeness in the classroom and oral answers given at the end of the semester, when responding to three questions drawn by the student, covering the entire range of material discussed during the classes. While assessing activeness, attention will be focused mainly on the insight contained in the analysis of selected work, while during the oral response it will focus on the students’ understanding of literature-forming processes and their knowledge of the discussed contexts of the literature.
Form of the exam: oral
During the exam questions are asked concerning issues covered during the lectures and classes.

Student: characterises an era, period or literary movement with the use of various determinants (philosophical, ideological, poetic, etc.), recalls the names of notable figures (including secondary), shows a detailed knowledge of the content of texts, performs a comprehensive analysis (referring to the genre, structure and content), lists various research positions, and places a writer's oeuvre and work in the historical-literary process. Their response is spontaneous, comprehensive, well-thought-out, and the student uses specialist terminology extensively.

Student: characterises an era, period or literary movement, shows knowledge of the content of texts, performs analysis (referring to the genre, structure and content), puts a writer's oeuvre and work in the context of the era. Their response is fluent, and the student uses specialist terminology.

Student: to a limited extent, after additional questions are asked, characterises an era, period or literary movement, demonstrates basic knowledge of the content of texts, performs analysis at a basic level (referring only to content), lists only a few figures from the movement and their work, indicates only constitutive features of the era, period or literary movement. Their response is hesitant; consists of incohesive information, and the student requires guidance from the examiner.
Requirements for grade 5!
- 3 points for each question,
- meeting the requirements for 3 points and additionally: knowledge and skills from outside the curriculum, knowledge of reading beyond the reading list, references to world literature.
