Belarussian descriptive grammar. Phonetics and phonology 3221-S1-0GO11A
Classes are designed to familiarize students with the issues in the field of phonetics and phonology, such as:
- the process of speech and its perception;
- classification of sounds and articulation of sounds;
- differences between speech and writing;
- principles of phonetic and phonological transcription;
- positional changes of sounds (the phenomenon of assimilation and dissimilation, prosthetic sounds);
- historical alternations of sounds;
- distinctive and redundant features in language;
- the concept of the phoneme and its variants, types of variants, types of phonological opposition;
- the concept of neutralization of distinctive features;
- Belarusian language phonological system: a consonant system; vocalic system and its determinants accent;
- prosodic elements of speech, characteristic of Belarusian accent and intonation.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course,
1. KNOWLEDGE: student understands and has an advanced knowledge of
- subject and methodological characteristics of research in Belarusian studies as well as terminology used in this area
- the most significant theories of literary and language studies
-the complex nature of a natural language, especially Belarusian
- Belarusian terminology of language studies
2. SKILLS: student can
- recognise various language structures within single utterances and assess them in terms of their correct usage
- recognise language structures and assess them in terms of their correct usage
- use the terminology of language studies in the process of analysing linguistic occurrences
- evaluate the level of his or her knowledge and skills as well as the awareness of the need for increasing knowledge and improving skills
3. SOCIAL COMPETENCES: student is ready to
- identify and solve dilemmas about the profession of a language specialist
Assessment criteria
The final exam, which consists of: a test of skills of phonetic transcription of a text and oral response. The student is can take an exam after passing the course. The course is passed on the basis of: the presence of control, the current preparation for classes, written tests.
