Old Church Slavonic grammar 3221-30GS12A

1. The mission of saints Cyril and Methodius. Alphabets: cyrillic and glagolitic. The oldest works in Old Church Slavonic.
2. Phonetic phenomena of pre-Slavic era (the right of open syllables, diphthongs monophthongization, the origin of vowels and consonants).
3. Metathesis, palatalization of dorsals.
4. The history of consonants groups with j, simplification of consonant groups.
5. The division of nouns in the declinations.
6. Simple and combine inflection of adjectives, declension of generic pronouns.
7. Conjugative classes. Conjugation of verbs in the present tense.
8. Aorists.
9. Imperfectum.
10. Creating imperative and conditional.
11. Participles of present tense (simple and complex).
12. Past participles, and their variety (simple and complex).
13. Compound past tenses, future tense.
14. Grammatical analysis of selected excerpts of language monuments in Old Church Slavonic.
15. Analysis of fragments of language monuments in Old Church Slavonic (continued).
Estimated number of hours that a student should spend on mastering the content is approximately - 90 (30 hrs. of lectures and 60 hours. of independent student's work.)

Prerequisites (description)

It is advisable to master the material provided in the Introduction to Linguistics, which the student performs in the first semester. It would be useful before starting the course to repeat the general information acquired the knowledge of Polish language from the secondary school.

Learning outcomes

After the semester of studying a student should be able to read and translate (using a dictionary) the original text of Old Church Slavonic. He should define properly the various forms of morphological phenomena,and interpret phonetic phenomena, reproduce the state of pre-Slavic forms starting from different forms of Old Slavinic Church language. Moreover, he should possess the ability to interpret the historical development of individual linguistic units and their forms in East Slavic languages, including in the Belarusian language.

Presence and activity in the classroom, current preparation for classes, oral tests.
