Russian media discourse: linguistic analysis and translation issues I 3202-S2SMRD11z
The seminar develops students' research skills as philologists and prepares them to conduct independent academic research. At the initial stage, students select a Master's thesis topic and formulate a preliminary title, review the state of research, select relevant literature and illustrative material, and formulate the methodological assumptions of their research. The course also covers issues of academic ethics, principles of source documentation, and bibliography preparation.
The linguistic component of the seminar focuses on the analysis of Russian media discourse in a broad sense. It covers, among other things, lexical, phraseological, word-formation, syntactic and stylistic features of media texts, as well as pragmatic and discourse-related issues such as evaluation, expressiveness, persuasion, colloquialisation, polyphony, strategies of influencing the audience, and the functions of headlines. Students may independently narrow the scope of their research to a selected genre, medium, period, linguistic phenomenon, or communicative issue.
The translation studies component addresses problems involved in translating Russian media texts, primarily journalistic texts, into Polish. The analysis covers, among other things, types and levels of equivalence, translation adequacy and functionality, linguistic, pragmatic and cultural determinants, translation strategies and techniques, as well as problems related to proper names, neologisms, terminology, culture-specific items, ambiguity, phraseology and wordplay. Students may select a text for translation and prepare a translation analysis accompanied by a translator's commentary.
The seminar allows for two main profiles of Master's theses: (1) a linguistic thesis based on the analysis of Russian media discourse, and (2) a translation studies thesis based on the translation of a selected journalistic text and an accompanying translation commentary. In both cases, the thesis should include a theoretical section based on relevant academic literature and an analytical section presenting the results of the student's own research.

Knowledge – the student:

– understands the need for systematic work on the preparation of the Master's thesis;
– is prepared to critically evaluate available sources and academic literature;
– observes the basic principles of academic integrity and research ethics.
Assessment criteria
The requirements for course completion include:
– continuous assessment;
– assessment of the student's progress in preparing the Master's thesis.
Assessment criteria:
– CA, TP (preparation of a bibliography; preliminary determination of the research method; identification and preliminary exploration of the contexts relevant to the topic).
Assessment is based on the student's systematic work on the Master's thesis, active participation in the seminar, completion of tasks assigned at individual stages, and presentation and discussion of research findings. In subsequent semesters, assessment covers, as appropriate, the research concept and methodology, selection of research material and literature, progress in the analysis, quality of the results presented, and successive sections of the Master's thesis.
Students are entitled to two unexcused absences; each subsequent absence requires justification. The instructor decides whether an absence is considered justified. Exceeding 50% of classes in total, including both justified and unjustified absences, may constitute grounds for failing the course. The requirements for passing the course in the resit period are the same as those applicable in the first examination period.
If it is not possible to conduct classes on campus, classes will be held using remote communication tools, most likely Google Meet and other tools recommended by the University of Warsaw.
