Semantics and the dictionary (Russian, Polish and Russian-Polish) 3202-S1WSS32o
The aim of the course is to systematize and expand students' knowledge of lexical semantics and lexicography. The most vital topics include the typology of linguistic dictionaries (in particular explanatory, ideographic and bilingual ones) as well as theoretical discussion over the principles of compilation of dictionaries, their content and aims they are to fulfil.
1. Principal concepts and terms of semantics. The problem of defining the meaning (philosophic and linguistic aspects).
2. Theoretical and methodological issues of semantic description of the meaning of language phrases.
3. Defining the meaning (ostensive, classic and cognitive definition).
4. Contemporary semantic theories. Analysis of semantic fields; componential semantics, cognitive semantics.
5. Lexicography and metalexicography as disciplines of linguistics.
6. Typology of contemporary linguistic dictionaries.
7. Explanatory dictionary vs. encyclopaedia; idea of a dictionary, types of definition in dictionaries, entry and its structure, criticism in lexicography.
8. Bilingual Russian-Polish, Polish-Russian dictionary: translator's dictionaries vs. traditional (translator's descriptive) dictionaries.
9. Dictionaries with content-oriented order of entries (Russian, Polish and Russian-Polish)
10. Needs analysis of Polish-Russian/Russian-Polish lexicography.

After completing the course, students should:
KNOWLEDGE
1. Has a detailed knowledge about contemporary achievements, centres and research schools in area of semantics and lexicography and about the history of these disciplines.
2. Has a deepened knowledge about the comprehensive nature of the language.
3. Has a knowledge tidied up, deepened are leading including terminology, theory and research methodology in semantics and lexicography to the specialization.
SKILLS
1. Explain and use the basic semantic and lexicographical terms.
2. He is analysing all sorts lexical groupings with the help of the semantic metalanguage.
3. He is able to assess the actual value and the practical usefulness of published foreign-language dictionaries with Russian and Polish (disregarding advertising/publishing information)
4. He is able to find and to use information up with using various sources (of textbooks, dictionaries, encyclopaedia, specialist web resources).
SOCIAK COMPETENCES:
1. Perceive semantics as the most vital component of language description.
2. Appreciate the utility of Polish and Russian dictionaries in terms of professional work.
3. He understands the permanent need of permanent improving oneself in the linguistic and general knowledge.
Assessment criteria
1. Continuous evaluation (preparation for classes and in-class activity) – 50%
2. Written term paper – 50%
The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.
Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.
If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
