"Beautiful 19th Century" in Russia 3202-S1WPWR21o
The aim of the course is to present different facets of Russian nineteenth century. The course includes such issues as historical background (Russian Empire in its relationships with European countries, internal policy, territorial expansion) and social questions ((stratification of Russian society, specificity of classes and social groups, socio-political movements, national and religious minorities, etc.),). It also discusses its educational system, everyday life of various social groups (work and leisure time, family life, travelling, fashion), the role of religion and philosophy, the development of music, architecture, and painting.
Special attention will also be given to issues of the sociology of literature, i.e. its functioning in society. Topics such as periodicals and readership, publishing activities, literary salons and societies, and the reception of literary works will be discussed.

KNOWLEDGE
Student:
- is aware of the historical, social and cultural conditioning of literature;
- knows the most important events in the history of 19th-century Russia;
- is familiar with the structure of nineteenth-century Russian society;
- knows what the everyday life of average representatives of various social strata looked like;
- knows the most important phenomena, directions, methods and authors in different fields of Russian 19th-century art;
- know the way literature functioned in the Russian 19th-century society.
SKILLS
Student:
- is able to associate the new facts learned during the course with knowledge gained from other classes;
- is able to connect changes in Russian culture and literature with ideological assumptions and conditions in the socio-political life of the era;
- knows how to use the acquired knowledge in his own research or other purposes.
SOCIAL COMPETENCES
Student:
- is aware of values related to cultural and religious diversity, and respects its manifestations;
- is aware of their knowledge, and is ready to learn more on his own;
- is aware of their responsibility for preservation of the cultural heritage of the region, country and Europe;
- has a need to develop their aesthetic sensitivity.
Assessment criteria
Written test containing 14 questions.
Percentage thresholds required to obtain specific grades:
3,0 – above 50%
3,5 – above 60%
4,0 – above 70%
4,5 – above 80%
5,0 – above 90%
5! – to obtain this grade a student should demonstrate outstanding extracurricular knowledge
The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.
Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course.The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.
If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
