Language of politics and ideology in Russia I 3202-S1SLJI31z
The goal of the seminar is to broaden the knowledge of the Russian language and its use in a political and/or ideological discourse as well as on the social and political situation in modern Russia. Students are acquainted with the rudiments of pragmatic linguistics, communication theory, rhetoric and research over discourse. Students run an analysis of a politically or ideologically involved corpus of expression. Based on the acquired knowledge and skills students are to prepare a bachelor's thesis devoted to a chosen issue. A linguistic or interdisciplinary approach to a given problem is assumed.
Specific objectives: broadening of the knowledge of the Russian language and the knowledge of modern-day Russia, as well as mastering the workshop of a linguist.
Specific issues:
1. Workshop. Bibliographic standard. So-called scientific instruments. Ethics of scientific work.
2. Basics of pragmatic linguistics. 3. The notion of a 'discourse'. Studies over 'discourse'.
4. Language as a tool for interaction. Propaganda, persuasion, manipulation, argumentation.
5. Semiotics of the political discourse.
6. The opposition 'Us – Them' in the ideological discourse.
7. Discourse of power and discourse of opposition.
8. Issues of language axiology.
9. Newspeak as a discourse.
10. Communication and rhetoric strategies in the political and ideological discourse.
11. Verbal aggression, hate speech, invectives in public communication, ways to linguistically discredit an opponent.
12. Information wars in the media.
13. History as a tool of ideological struggle. Problems of historical memory and its linguistic expression.
14. Other specific issues adapted to the subject of bachelor's works.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
– students are acquainted with the works of pragmatic linguistics, communication theory, rhetoric and research over discourse,
– students have organised knowledge on the Russian language, as well as social and political reality of modern-day Russia,
– students have the knowledge of basic methodologies of research over discourse,
− student knows the rules of the editing of scientifictexts in Russian and Polish,
− the student knows the rules of copyright.
Skills:
− the student presents his circle of scientific interests associated with the Bachelor's seminar profile,
− the student perceives by himself the problem of research and makes the initial formulation of the thesis,
− the student can find using a variety of sources and methods informations on the topic of his thesis,
– students use basic terminology in the scope of pragmatic linguistics, communication theory and rhetoric,
– the student can write a summary of a linguistic work.
– the student possesses detailed research abilities in the analysis and interpretation of the literary works.
− the student is able to charaterize the genezis and value of discussedissues,
– the student has an ability to work systematically.
– the student is able to clearly and precisely formulate his/her thoughts.
Social competences:
− the student understands the specifics of linguistic studies,
− the student is able to adequately define the priorities for the task,
− the student has a deeper awareness of his knowledge and skills, and feels the need to further learning.
Assessment criteria
Continuous evaluation (current preparation for classes and activities). Attendance check. Writing a chapter of bechelor's work.
