Elements of translation analysis and proper translation. Taking into account the cultural and textual context to support the unambiguous interpretation of the text. Passing on non-equivalent lexis (including surnames and foreign names from the third culture). Translation of phraseologisms, biblisms, winged phrases; translation tradition on the example of biblical and mythological
motives and historical elements, including the native language; ability to search for sources of quotations movies, poetry), changing the information perspective – cultural differences. Issues of textual consistency – syntactic equivalents. Attempting to perform paragraph level analysis and translation. Basic translation techniques – antonymic translation, generalization /concretization, amplification, functional analog, lexical, syntactic and categorical synonyms.

Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE
- has basic knowledge of the translation analysis of the original text;
- knows the basic translation techniques;
- has knowledge of the purposeful and effective use of bilingual and monolingual dictionaries, specialist lexicons and useful internet resources.
SKILLS
- can analyze and interpret the original text;
- can search and use linguistic and translation information using various sources;
- can translate at the level of word, phrase, paragraph and larger units;
- knows how to use basic translation techniques.
SOCIAL COMPETENCES
- understands the importance of understanding the culture, traditions and realities of the other country;
- is aware of the need for lifelong learning,
- is aware of the level of knowledge and translation skills, and is also able to complement and improve them.
Assessment criteria
Conditions for completing the course:
- presence and active participation in classes,
- systematic preparation for the classes of the given material of the given material for the classes,
- assessment of homework and control work.
Estimated total number of hours a student must spend in achieving the learning outcomes specified for the subject:
- exercise = 30 h (1 ECTS)
- independent preparation for each exercise and control work = 30 h (1 ECTS)
TOTAL about 60 hours
Assessment components:
- continuous, formative assessment (current preparation for classes, activity) – 25%
- assessment of homework – 30%
- mid-term control work (Russian translation) – 35%
Criteria for evaluating a written translation:
a/ compliance of the translated content with the original,
b/ correctness of the translation of terms, phraseology, proper names,
c/ using the translator's basic tools,
d/ grammatical, spelling and lexical correctness,
e/ adapting linguistic means to the nature of the speech.
The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.
Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.
If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
Practical placement
