Functional Stylistics of The Russian Language 3202-S1OSF31o
The classes are both theoretical and practical. Students are acquainted with stylistic diversity of linguistic means belonging to different sub-systems of the Russian language system. Determinants of using given linguistic means are discussed. Functional markedness of linguistic means is distinguished from emotional and expressive markedness of linguistic means; problems related to linguistic and stylistic norms are discussed; together with typical stylistic errors. Special attention is given to the problem of the classification of functional styles of the Russian language, the description of linguistic means, sub-styles and speech genres typical of each style in the Russian language.
Students are taught to recognize to which functional style a given text belongs and draw up their own texts belonging to a given stylistic style.

Knowledge:
– knows basic notions in the field of functional stylistics;
– has structured knowledge of stylistic markedness of linguistic means;
– knows basic functional variations of the Russian language;
– has structured knowledge about characteristic properties of the language of each of functional variations of the contemporary Russian language.
Skills:
– uses the language in various communication situations purposefully and consciously;
– recognizes stylistic errors and proofreads texts- in particular scientific texts;
– recognizes stylistically-marked linguistic means and on their basis determines to which functional variation a given text belongs;
– is able to (to a basic extent) draw up texts belonging to various linguistic variations (in particular a scientific variation).
Social competence:
– is aware of their responsibility for preserving cultural heritage (linguistic tradition) of Poland and Russia;
– understands the necessity of observing norms in the social life and in interpersonal contacts.
Assessment criteria
The grade is based on three components:
1. points for preparation for classes – 50%
2. points from homework – 20%
3. text analysis grade – 30%
Students prepare a stylistic analysis of the scientific text during the penultimate class. The analysis should indicate the appearing in the text language style indicators on lexical, formative, morphological and syntactic level, and next formulate conclusions from conducted analysis.
2,0 – in at least half cases wrongly chosen examples or important style indicators are omitted.
3,0 – in few cases wrongly chosen examples and/or omitted around 30% style indicators.
3,5 – in few cases wrongly chosen examples and/or omitted around 20% style indicators; no conclusions or a lot of language mistakes.
4,0 – examples chosen correctly, omitted around 10% style indicators, a lot of language mistakes
4,5 – examples chosen correctly, all of style indicators included but not enough examples given, correct conclusions, few language and/or spelling and punctuation
mistakes.
5,0 – examples chosen correctly, all of style indicators included, correct conclusions, few spelling and punctuation mistakes are allowed.
Grade excellent 5! can get a student who got 5,0 from both thesis and homework, got points from activity during classes and in semester thesis have not made any mistake.
Student workload:
seminar = 30 hours (1 ECTS),
independent preparation for each class: 20 hours + preparation for analysis: 10 hours (1 ECTS)
Total: about 60 hours (2 ECTS)
The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.
Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.
If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
