Translation of specialised texts – teacher’s choice (C language) - English 3201-3TSACA
The aim of the course is to familiarise the students with selected special issues in literary translation, either genre-dependent (e.g. characteristic of drama or poetry) or connected with an intensified presence of particular phenomena (like novel metaphor in an author’s style) in a given text.
The course is a practical one and is meant at enhancing the participants’ skills required to translate artistic texts between English and Polish. It also aims at raising the students’ awareness of the functioning of translation in social and cultural contexts and, by the same token, the ability to find translation solutions which accommodate these contexts.
Class hours: 30 hrs.
Preparation – estimated 30 hrs.
In sum – c. 60hrs corresponding to 2 ECTS.
Course contents:
1. Rendering a dramatic text.
2. Poetry translation: issues of form.
3. Poetry translation: conceptual constraints.
4. Punctuation of the source and the target literary text.
5. Melic translation as constrained translation.
6. Ambiguity and metaphoric quality of the text. Novel metaphor as a translation problem.
7. Contextualising the translation for the target reader.
Forms of work:
pre-translation text analysis, workshop translations, individual assignments and project work, teacher’s presentations.

Learning outcomes
On completing the course, the student’s competence is enhanced in selected special aspects of literary translation.
- The student is able to carry out a pre-translation analysis and to adopt a translation strategy according to its findings; (S)
- understands specific requirements of certain types of literary translation; (K)
- recognizes the demands of translating for the stage; (K)
- knows the limitations and licenses obtaining in poetry translation; (K)
- understands the demands set for music-linked translation; is able to assess adequacy of such a translation and to pinpoint segments which require correcting in terms of melic qualities; (S)
- consciously applies punctuation for literary purposes; (S)
- is aware of the fact that translations function in social and cultural contexts and makes decisions that account for this fact; (SC)

Assessment criteria
Credit is given on basis of: regular attendance, participation in in-class discussions, timely submission of written translation assignments.
The criteria of grading translation assignments:
Assessment takes into account translational, pragmatic, linguistic and formal aspects.
99% – 100 – 5!
98% – 91% – 5
90% – 86% – 4,5
85% – 76% – 4
75% – 71% – 3,5
70% – 60% – 3
below this level – 2 (unsatisfactory).
A credit requirement is also having no more than two absences in a 30hrs' module (In case of excess absences, compensation assignments may apply, subject to the teacher's instructions). More than 50% of absences automatically results in failing the course, in accordance with the Rules of Study.

he course is taught in a workshop format, and reading assignments are not part of credit requirements. For executing quality translations it is nevertheless necessary to consult various monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, reference works, parallel texts as well as corpora in both languages.
