Certified translation 3201-3TPDA
Course objectives: The course has been designed to provide guidance to students for the ministerial examination for sworn translators. Its main objective is to introduce students into certified translation and professional practices of sworn translators. Another objective is to improve strategies and techniques of certified translation, including methods of finding relevant terminological and phraseological equivalents and of building a function target text which respects TL conventions and accounts for recipients' knowledge gaps.
Content: Introduction to certified translation and certification of translations, practical aspects of the sworn translator's profession, techniques and strategies in certified translation. Terminology work: terminology related to BMD documents, education, employment and other regulated areas, business activity, criminal and civil procedure, etc. Main types of Polish, UK and US official documents: contrastive analysis.
We will translate documents provided for three groups of clients:
(1) translations for individual clients: BDM certificates (birth certificate, death certificate), school diplomas and professional certificates, certificate of employment, contract of employment, will and testament and other official documents;
(2) translations for business entities: power of attorney, certificate of incorporation, articles of association.
(3) translations for police and courts: claim form, defence, judgment and other pleadings.

- can justify and critically assess translation strategies and techniques that were applied
- can check, revise and verify translations
- can describe a document
SOCIAL COMPETENCES
- knows and applies sworn translators' ethics; is able to keep deadlines and perform translations with diligence
- is able to collaborate within the group and to organise its work.
Assessment criteria
Continuous assessment of attendance and class participation; own work at home; punctual submission of pre-class translation assignments and assessment of one of the translations submitted to the e-learning platform - 30%; assessment of a translation with commentary - 30%; a passing mark on the final in-class translation test (ministerial mock exam) - 40%.
