Translation Internship 3201-3PRAKTŁUM
The curriculum of full-time second cycle studies (police, master's degree) at the Institute of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw includes an obligatory translation internship for students of MA studies in their first year of studies.
The duration of the internship is four weeks, with 30 hours of practical translation effort planned for each week (i.e. a total of 120 hours).
Interns work into and from their B or B and C languages, with at least half of the total duration of the internship (60 hours) must be devoted to B language.
The internship should take place during the summer holidays, but other arrangements are possible if they have been previously agreed with the ILS UW Translation Internship Coordinators. Alternative arrangements must not interfere with the student's core learning duties (classes or examinations).
Students look for internship offers by contacting institutions / companies / organisations and arrange the dates of their internships. Internship offers are also presented during internship days and language fairs organized by the Institute and the Careers Office of the University of Warsaw. In addition, internship offers sent by translation agencies are regularly posted on the course’s page on the Moodle platform.
After contacting a translation agency/institution/organisation interested in having an intern and after making the necessary arrangements regarding the dates, the student downloads a template of a Letter of Referral for an internship and fills it in with their personal data.
The Referral form is an active pdf form. To fill it in, Adobe Reader or equivalent software is required. The student fills in all fields apart from the date and referral number. The form should be filled in on the computer and care should be taken to ensure the correctness and completeness of the data entered.
Subsequently the student presents the completed Referral to the Coordinator, no later than one week before the start of the internship. The Coordinator checks is the form contains all the necessary data, signs and stamps the document.
The Coordinator must receive the Referral one week ahead of the starting date of the internship because the student needs to be registered for the obligatory accident insurance provided by the University of Warsaw.
The student receives a credit for completing the internship (entered into the USOS system’s protocol) after presenting to the Coordinator a certificate of internship completion confirming that the student has completed a four-week-long translation internship (120 hours) in his/her language combination (where by a minimum of 50% of the translation effort was for language B). The host institution may use the Internship Certificate form which can be downloaded from the subject’s Moodle page.
Translation contracts may not be the basis for obtaining a credit for translation internship.
The student can to apply for internship credit on the basis of their own (completed) translation jobs if the work translated by the student has been published with the translator's name mentioned in the publication.
Internship supervisors should be contacted during their office duty hours by end of the June exams period.
