Computer-aided translation (CAT) 3201-3CAT
This 30-hours course is conducted in blended learning mode. Every second week there is a meeting in the computer lab, every second week there is a new e-learning topic with both readings and exercises.
During the online part students will familiarize themselves with more theoretical aspects of computer-aided translation (technologies, workflow according to the PN/EN ISO 17100 norm, benefits and limitations of machine translation, typical file formats used for resourses exchange etc.). During the e-learning part students will also have practice with 2 CAT tools: OmegaT (free, open-source software) and Wordfast Anywhere (web app).
During the workshops in the computer lab students will get to know 2 most popular CAT applications on the market: Kilgray MemoQ and SDL Trados.

Theory:
- PN/EN ISO 17100 norm,
- TM (translation memory) and TB (termbase) technologies,
- machine translation (MT).
Technology:
- TMX i XLIFF file formats,
- resourses exchange between various CAT tools,
- import and export of documents, TM's and TB's.
Practice:
- hands-on practice with 4 different CAT tools.
Student's approximate workload:
- teaching hours: 30h;
- self-study: 7,5h (0,5h / week);
- preparation of the final project: 2,5h.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
• student has knowledge of free and paid software for computer-aided translation and of its capabilities;
• student knows key technologies in CAT software and their influence on the translator's work;
• student knows the limitations of CAT tools; role and responsibilities of a human translator in the CAT environment;
• student knows the workflow and data flow in computer-aided translation projects;
• student knows the PN/EN ISO 17100 norm;
• student knows possibilities and limitations when working with specialized machine translation systems , esp. eTranslation (European Commission machine translation for Public Administrations in the EU Member States).
Skills:
• student can cooperate with other translators within larg online and offline projects;
• student can organize his/her work in coputer-aided translation projects;
• student can pre- and post-translate documents;
• student can work with CAT-specific file foramts, e.g. TMX and XLIFF;
• student can work with professional CAT software: Kilgray MemoQ and SDL Trados Studio;
• student can work with TM server;
• student can work with free CAT software: OmegaT;
• student can work with web-based CAT software: Wordfast Anywhere;
• student can use machine translation system (like eTranslation) to make his/her work more efficient and provide good-quality texts at the same time.
Assessment criteria
Credit with a grade, based on attendance, active participation in workshops and e-learning activities, and a final project (translation of selected text in a selected CAT tool, with a properly created TM and TB).
