Contrastive Analysis - level - 1 3201-2TANKA2
The course provides an introduction to the theoretical foundations of contrasting the grammatical systems of English and Polish, including the key notions of equivalence and congruence. A major part of the course is devoted to an overview of the principal grammatical contrasts between the two languages, especially on the level of the clause, the verb phrase and the noun phrase. The course also deals extensively with questions of thematic organization of English and Polish sentences and texts, and the differences in the repertoire and use of grammatical means used for information management (change in word order vs. use of special constructions), as well as with matters of the actual usage and stylistic value of different types of constructions available in the grammatical repertoires of the two languages (e.g. the use of subordinate clauses and infinitive constructions vs. the use of nominalizations). Many of the points discussed in class are based on analyses of parallel texts in English and Polish. The ultimate goal of the course is to enable students to identify and explain the kinds of grammatical contrast discussed, so that they can use the knowledge and skills acquired during the course in their study and future work in the fields of translation and language teaching.
