Introduction to Translation Theory 3201-1WTRA
The aim of the course is to present the history of translation and the present state of the translator's profession, linguistic and intercultural theories of translation, principal types of translation (written translation-interpreting-machine translation), principles guiding the evaluation of translation (translation as product) and the ethical dimension of translation. Detailed syllabus comprises the following topics: history of translation and the development of translation theory, literal vs. free translation (historical overview), linguistic and cultural untranslatability, types of translation as distinguished by source text, types of translation equivalence (Nida, Newmark, House, Koller, Komissarov, Kade), adequacy, acceptability and faithfulness of translation, translator's competences and roles, translation strategies and techniques (Vinay and Darbelnet).

Type of course
Learning outcomes
a. knowledge:
- students know the reasons of „relative untranslatability”
- students understand the notion of equivalence and its usefulness in translation practice
- students know the possible subfields of translation studies
- students understand the notion of translation errors and know different types of such errors
- students know the basic cognitive issues connected with the translation process
- students know the problems involved in audiovisual translation and understand the constraints of each AVT translation mode
b. skills:
- students can recognize the most difficult translation problems
- students know different translation techniques used to solve particular problems
- students know how to avoid certain typical translation errors
c. individual and group competencies:
- students are aware of the translator’s responsibilities and notice the ethical problems connected with this job
- students understand the role of translators in contemporary world
Learning outcomes according to 0-3 grading scale in the area of:

b. skills 2 points
c. individual and group competencies 2 points
Assessment criteria
Learning outcomes evaluation procedures:
- active participation in lectures
- written test at the end of the semester
- Two absences allowed (if the number is exceeded, the student should ask the teacher for extra assignments; if the number of absences exceeds 50%, the student fails the course in accordance with the Rules of Study).
The criteria of grading
99% – 100% – 5!
98% – 91% – 5
90% – 86% – 4,5
85% – 76% – 4
75% – 71% – 3,5
70% – 60% – 3
below this level – 2 (unsatisfactory).
