Phonetics and Phonology of Language B - English 3201-1FONBA
The course is intended to demonstrate the English phonological system and theoretical aspects of English pronunciation. It introduces mechanisms of speech production, which constitute the background for the classification of English sounds. With the use of International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) main systems of phonetic transcription are presented. Aside segmental features of English, the material covers topics related to the suprasegmental layer of the language, including processes in connected speech and patterns of intonation. The course is geared towards the needs of the Polish learner and teacher of English. More specific topics involve:
1. Speech production and classification of speech sounds: articulatory phonetics, acoustic phonetics, auditory phonetics, sounds of English
2. Transcription systems. Pronunciation dictionaries
3. The phoneme
4. English vowels
5. English consonants
6. Rules for English allophones
7. The syllable and the word: sonority values, syllable constituency, phonotactics, stress, word accentual patterns
8. Vowel reduction
9. Connected speech: rhythm, pitch, tone, phonostylistics, weak forms, stress structures, neutralization, assimilation, elision, liason
10. Forms of intonation
11. Functions of intonation
