The course is intended for students preparing to work with users of Polish Sign Language (PJM). Its aim is to develop students’ competence in the conscious and accurate use of PJM, with particular emphasis on visual-spatial expression, facial expressions, body posture, movement dynamics, and the organization of communicative space.
Classes are conducted in a workshop format. Participants develop body awareness and learn to use both manual and non-manual elements essential for signed communication. Exercises focus on the precision of sign production, smooth transitions between signs, coordination of hand and body movements, grammatical facial expressions, and maintaining eye contact.
During the course, students also learn to identify errors in signed communication and become familiar with strategies that support the clarity and naturalness of communication in PJM. Activities are conducted in groups and include video recordings, communication analysis, and practical exercises.

• eye contact and communication synchronization exercises.
Student workload – 1 ECTS credit:
15 contact hours (3/4 ECTS)
5 hours of independent study: homework and preparation for assessment (1/4 ECTS)
If in-person teaching is not possible, classes will be conducted using remote communication tools designated by the University of Warsaw.
The course is delivered as part of the project “Integrated Programme for the Development of Teaching – ZIP 2.0”, co-financed by the European Social Fund under the European Funds for Social Development Programme 2021–2027 (FERS) (contract no. FERS.01.05-IP.08-0365/23-00).

• knows the principles of correct expression in PJM, including the use of facial expressions, space, and movement (K_W01)
• knows the principles of ergonomics and body care in signed communication (S4_W03)
• knows methods for correcting errors in expression and communication in PJM.

• understands the importance of visual-spatial communication in the Deaf community (S4_K02)

Assessment criteria
Assessment methods and criteria:
• continuous assessment (completion of homework assignments),
• attendance monitoring (a maximum of two absences is permitted),
• final presentation.
All assignments are graded according to the following percentage scale:
99%–100% – 5!
91%–98% – 5
86%–90% – 4.5
76%–85% – 4
71%–75% – 3.5
60%–70% – 3
0%–59% – 2
The course ends with a graded credit. The conditions for the resit are the same as for the first assessment date.
