Consecutive interpreting (C language) -French - level 3 3200-M2-3TKOCF3
The course aims to develop previously acquired consecutive interpreting skills. The core of the class consists of workshop exercises in interpreting texts of various lengths, initially between 3 and 5 minutes in length and by the end of the semester - up to 5-6 minutes in length. Students develop their note-taking techniques and learn to detect errors, in note-taking also in texts with a lot of information and abstract vocabulary. At the same time, the teacher presents practical information on the profession of consecutive interpreting and the ethics of interpreting - this component is spread over the whole semester and builds on previously acquired knowledge. In addition to consecutive interpreting in the 'traditional' mode, students learn about and practise accompanying consecutive interpreting in liaison/ad hoc mode and in dialogue mode with dynamic changes of direction. During the course, students not only work on improving their interpreting skills, but also expand their general knowledge and language skills (native and foreign) through the texts used. At this stage, more specialised texts are used which require lexical preparation and are more challenging for students, and students are introduced to portable equipment which can facilitate consecutive and mixed mode assignments (infoports, portable interpreting devices - PIEs).
Student workload:
30 contact hours;
25 hours class preparation;
5 hours preparation for the credit.
Total approx. 60 hours = 2 ECTS.
If it is not possible to conduct classes on-site, classes will be held using distance communication tools, most likely Google Meet, ZOOM and other recommended by UW.

The student knows:

SKILLS
The student can:
- interpret consecutively (with note-taking) a text on a general topic delivered at different speeds (approx. 6 minutes), (S2_U04, K_U03, K_U04, K_U07, K_U08, K_U09, K_U10, K_U11, K_U13)
- interpret consecutively (with note-taking) a specialised text (up to 6 min) from French into Polish and from Polish into French, selecting appropriate equivalents adequate to the given social context (S2_U04, K_U03, K_U04, K_U07, K_U08, K_U09, K_U10, K_U11, K_U13)
- consecutively interpret in accompanying and dialogue modes and operate portable interpreting equipment (so-called Infoports) (S2_U04, K_U03, K_U04, K_U07, K_U08, K_U09, K_U10, K_U11, K_U13)
SOCIAL COMPETENCES
The student is prepared to
-critically evaluate oral statements and their interpretations and evaluate errors (S2_KO1, K_K01, K_K05, K_K06)
-responsibly perform the professional role of an interpreter, taking into account changing market needs, in particular social needs (S2_KO7, K_K02, K_K03, K_K04)
- uphold the ethos of the interpreting profession as well as comply with and further develop the principles of professional ethics in interpreting (S2_KO8, K_K04, K_K05).
Assessment criteria
Credit based on:
- Attendance at classes (a maximum of 2 absences is allowed)
- active participation in classes
- successful delivery of final interpreting task/s, assessment criteria:

Retake under the same terms as the first attempt to pass the course. Two absences are permitted (if the permitted limit of two absences is exceeded, the student should ask the lecturer to determine the form of assessment for the course material; if absences exceed 50%, this results in the student failing the course in accordance with the Study Regulations).
