Specialised Translation - English/Italian (B/C) 3200-M2-2TSBCaw
The course aims to prepare students to work in the quality of interpreters, journalists, analysts and/or public servants, specialising in the political and social life of Italy, the UK and the US. Students will analyse current resources (the press, reports, documents) related to contemporary Italian, British and American politics and society.
Student workload:
- Classroom activities - 30 hrs,

- demonstration; explanation; giving examples; correction; providing real world links; use of internet sources related to a discipline, connection of linguistic, communicative and cultural aspects, etc.

Learning outcomes
The student is expected to:
- know morphological and syntactic structures, understand utterances and analyse written texts at B2 level; know the definitions of words, their synonyms as well as English and Italian synonyms (K_W01);
- have well-established lexical and grammatical knowledge in the fields mentioned below (K_W02);
- understand the role of language in interpersonal and cultural communication (K_W10).
The student is expected to:
- have language skills at B2+ level in the CEFR scale, also in regards to typical professional situations requiring knowledge of techniques, strategies and various communication channels (K_U07, K_U10);
- be able to critically analyse texts as products of culture, search, analyse, evaluate and select authentic texts in English and Italian (K_U01);
- be able to independently acquire knowledge in the field of Italian and English, guided by the lecturer's instructions; assess the usefulness of specific sources of information, eg. dictionaries (online), corpora, articles, etc. (K_U03);
- be able to translate from English to Italian and vice versa all kinds of written and oral statements (K_U04);
- have ordered theoretical knowledge about the translation process, including specialized translation, its types and specificity, know the basic translation techniques (K_W04);
- be able to recognize the characteristic cultural elements and properly interpret the phenomena concerning Italian and English; be able to adequately react in every communicational situation according to the cultural context, using certain fixed phrases (K_U05);
- have the ability to prepare written work in English and Italian in the field of introduced issues (K_U08);
- the ability to prepare oral presentations in English and Italian based on properly selected source materials K_U09).
The student is expected to:
- be ready to cooperate and work in a group, take various roles of participation and make sure to comply with the rules of communication; understand the need to improve the translator's workshop throughout his/her life (K_K01);
- be ready to define priorities and plan activities to implement specific language, communication and professional tasks; understand the need for self-education and the need for continuous improvement of qualifications (K_K03);
- be ready to adequately identify and resolve dilemmas of communication in English and Italian, caused by the asymmetry of language systems and cultural differences (K_K04);
- be ready to participate in the cultural life of Italy and the English-speaking countries for the promotion of both cultures, using both traditional and modern forms and media (K_K06);
- be able to professionally interact and work in a professional group; demonstrate ingenuity, activity and regularity in the implementation of his/her own and team projects (S_K02).
Assessment criteria
Methods of student work evaluation:
- Weekly evaluation (preparation and active participation, vocabulary tests),
- End-of-term project work – translating two course-related texts, chosen by the student and approved by the instructor (one text translated from Italian into English, the other one from English into Italian).
The course final grade will consist of:
- 50% weekly evaluation,
- 50% end-of-term project work.
Percentage-to-grade policy:
96%-100% – 5!
90%-95% – 5
85%-89% – 4+
80%-84% – 4
70%-79% – 3+
60%-69% – 3
Translation grading criteria:
- conveying the original message;
- terminology and phraseology;
- grammar;
- style.
Basic rules:
1. Absences – students are allowed to be absent twice (no explanation required).
2. Preparation – students are obliged to be duly prepared for each and every class. In extraordinary circumstances, students are allowed to be unprepared (e.g. no homework translation brought) twice a term.
