The course aims at developing in students translation competence, i.e. the ability to translate a text in a foreign language into a text in another foreign language, while keeping in mind the charasteristic features of the system of the language of the translation. Furthermore, students learn how to critically use monolingual dictionaries and look for information they need.

KNOWLEDGE:
- the student is able to correctly interpret written texts in both foreign languages (K_W01);
- the student has a well-founded lexical and grammatical knowledge of both foreign languages (K_W02);
- the student understands the role of a translation in interpersonal and -cultural communication (K_W10)
SKILLS
- the student is able to search for, analyze, evaluate and select linguistic and extralinguistic information in both foreign languages (K_U01);
- the student is able to assess the usefulness of specific sources of information, e.g. online dictionaries, language corpora, internet articles, etc. (K_U03);
- the student can translate from English to German and the other way round various types of written texts (K_U04)
SOCIO-CULTURAL COMPETENCE
- the student has the ability to successfully identify and resolve translation problems in English and German, caused by the asymmetry of language systems and cultural differences (K_K04)
Assessment criteria
Methods of evaluating the work of students:
- evaluation of activity during the classes and of the preparation for the lessons
- homework assignments
- mid-semester exams
- final written exam.
Assessment criteria:
The final grade comprises:
- steady evaluation (activity) – 50%
- written exam – 50%.
The overall result is established in accordance with the following scale:
51%-60% = 3
61%-70% = 3+
71%-80% = 4
81%-90% = 4+
91%-100% = 5
Absences
Three unexcused absences are allowed in the semester. In case of exceeding the number, additional homework will be given.
